I understand that it’s wrong, but I do have to admit sitting at a train crossing is more pleasurable watching the painted train cars go by then the un vandalized ones.
Wonder what BNSF thinks about this?

Not sure what it costs them to have a railroad car repainted but I bet it ain’t cheap.

In my world I don’t get all worked up over something as petty as spray painting a bridge pier.
I will, just for your sake; call it petty Vandalism, it ranks right up there with jay walking.
October 28, 2011 at 2:35 pm #1004860Jay walking doesn’t cost millions of dollars each year to correct, graffiti does.

With all due respect… I guess I was raised to see things different.
Jaywalking might be dumb, careless and ill advised but it isn’t comparable in my opinion. “Petty Vandalism,” as you put it, would get my backside tanned as a kid. I guess the reason people are reacting so strongly is that apparently many of us were taught that unless something is yours… you keep your hands off it. Period. I know what’s been taught me, and what I would teach my children, is that this type of destruction and disregard for property rights, even public property, is on par with stealing.
Your mileage may vary.
October 28, 2011 at 2:41 pm #1004865what about when all those fire hydrants were all done up as the Peanuts gang by an artist, did you guys all get your undies in a bundle then? Just ask’n.

Was he given permission by the city to paint the hydrants? My guess is he was.

I think this fits the NIMBY criteria very nicely. I would wager a guess that all the guys who think this is OK and the same guys who would be pee’ing and moaning if their house, garage, heck even mailbox was tagged.
Where do you think the money to repaint this stuff comes from, the magical paint fairy
Are there some great artists who do this, heck yeah. Should they maybe get a job working for a painting company instead to spending all their time late at night painting the sides of bridges or train cars?
Don’t they know night time is for catching catfish
October 28, 2011 at 2:54 pm #1004873I agree, permission granted, but was there still a cost to repaint? Most likely a small percentage of what it takes to fix the rest of the problems, but if we all have zero tolerance, where do we begin? I agree with both sides, in some respects, if we could control were this “art” was placed we could have a much nicer drive.

Well I guess i could go with a purple helmet if I lose a bet.
October 28, 2011 at 3:59 pm #1004892First, thanks for not being offended by my remark Jeff. I hate it when I have to come back and explain no ill will intended for something I posted.
As far as the cost to repaint box cars I am guessing it is either too expensive to do or cost nothing as they ignore it. I come to that conclusion judging the amount of tagged box cars. I am guessing the latter.
I kind of see train taggin slightly different than say a bridge or rocks along the Mississippi.

Cmon James, my entire point is the art work is fantastic in some cases.
So you also must have had you butt tanned for doing something wrong when you were young.
Me too
My children also.So that being said; in the grand sceme of things, painting the base of a bridge pier is still nothing more that “PETTY VANDALISM”

Yes, they would and double trouble if they were gang signs.

But it does if you take in account of needless accidents and hospital visits and fatalities just because someone was to lazy to walk to the corner and wait their turn.
Jay walking is a serious offense and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Brian,
Thank you for contacting BNSF Railway on this issue. Graffiti on rail cars is illegal, dangerous, and expensive. We work with local law enforcement where we can to reduce and eliminate this illegal activity. The railroad doesn’t own most of the rail cars on our network, shippers or leasing companies do, and repainting rail cars is expensive. To conduct this activity, people are trespassing on private property, which is also potentially dangerous. I hope you find this information useful.

October 28, 2011 at 5:55 pm #1004946Oh yeah, don’t wonder into a rail yard shooting trains for a high school media class. We did and got yelled at and then had to watch a guy blubber about pulling dead bodies from train tracks.
No, I did not tag a boxcar.

Petty Vandalism is oh I don’t know……..toilet papering tree’s? Soaping windows?
I see where you are trying to go with the art reference but it is a stretch at best. These people are vandals not artists. Artists paint pictures, do murals on buildings, get paid for their “artistic abilities”. These people destroy personal and private party as a way of entertainment. If you think it’s no big deal I’ll call you the next time my building gets hit, you can clean it up. After all………..it’s no big deal, only art.
