I have a cabin by Cumberland, Wi. We built it in ’99. Seems like I’ve always had a problem with mice. Especially in the fall. I’ve gone around the outside of the cabin several times looking for entry points. Found several, but obviously not all. We also have lots of those Asian Beatles. Now we have a crap load of bees in the basement. I’ve tried using the bug bombs and it kills quite a few of the beatles and flies. Eventually trap the mice by January.

Has anyone used a pest control service? Are they worth while? They don’t appear to be cheap. I’m more interested in finding out where they are getting in. Any other recommendations? Thanks.

Asian beetles can get in just about anywhere. The key to keeping them to a minimum in your house is to apply a liquid chemical barrier just before soybean harvest. Typically this should occur at the end of September first part of November. The application is only needed one time as it has a 30 day residual effect. Places like Orkin and other pest control services charge $60-100 for this application. I honestly do not think you can seal up an older home or cabin to keep these pests out.

Mice are another issue. It is next to impossible to keep them out of a home, cabin, or camper. You can put out bait stations for them as well that will last over time.

As a past Orkin employee and Commercial Pesticide Applicator, I do beleive the pest control services are worth the money. They have knowledgeable staff and great products to do the job they promise.

Do you have an over abundance of Captain Morgan at your cabin? I’ve heard they are attracted to that.

Thanks for the reply Watts. Is there anything you haven’t done in the past?

I spoke to Orkin last night and got some prices from them. 160.00 for the first visit/assessment and 110.00 for followup visits every 3 months. I have 1 other company to check with today. My wife freaks out on this stuff. And when momma’s not happy, noone is.

google organic mice repellant. I can’t recall the name, but I have successfully used some in the past for the camper. I see one or 2 that come with a money back guarantee.

Can always go the Decon route, guarantee that will get them. Problem is if they die in the cabin. I’m told they need water after they chow, so they head out in search of. Can just put it outside.

At one time someone from IDO was having problems with mice in a cabin up north and was not able to be there all winter. He was using a 5 gal pail trap. Baited rod on the top and anti-freeze in the bottom. Mice would walk out on the rod and slip off, then drop down and drown in the anti-freeze and there would be not smell.
