Knot Wars . Really? … Really. I was reading an article in my NAFC magazine and there is a series called Knot Wars. Staff members challenge line to hook knots and loser goes home. They assess each knot using mono, flourocarbon and braid. up this month is the Homer Circle Knot up against Rebeck Knot. And the winner will go up against last years champ The Berkley Braid knot. ( lines used for testing… 14-pound Berkley TransOptic, 15-pound trilene 100% Flourocarbon, 14 pound Trilene Fire Line). Dont know why I posted this. I thought all knots were the same? Any thoughts??? Being a novice fisher I didnt know knots were this serious enough to war over. Thanks Wil

well, i guess they can only re-write so many topics so many times. Sounds like there are really “digging” for articles to fill the publication… See it all to often in mags.

yeah… me either… kinda funny, the clinch and the improved clinch are all i ever have needed. well, that and the the doubble loop snell on some jigs… but i rarely loose fish and or lures due to knot failure????

Wil there are differences in knots and their breaking/slipping strength.

A few years back I tied my tried and true knot to hold on James Holst’s SUPER FINELY tuned raps to his fish line. Little did I know that the knot I tied worked great for my braid, 10/0 hooks and 40 pound flatheads, but they slipped out with the tug of a 7 pound walleye when using firewire line (I think).

I still get crap about that.

Hands down best knot for your business? See below.

One thing I noticed watching knot wars on TV is that no matter what knot you tie, the holding power is increased by going through the hardware hole twice.

If you are a serious angler or a professional angler/Guide you may want to pay attention to knot wars. Lots of good info there.

It is an unbiased test of both line quality and knots…one also learns how many line companies falsely advertise their 10#test line that breaks at 18# on the show. That was really an 18# test line. Most all braided lines are underrated…try to break 8# Fireline with your bare hands

I look at the diameter of the line and then the lb test… When you compare line qualities of same type/diameter lines you are then doing a fair test.

BTW… knots are extremely important… clinch knots are a poor knot as far as %of strength retention…improved clinch is a bit better.

For guiding clients I use a Palomar for just about everything…the Uniknot is also dependable…when the fish of a lifetime is lost and the end of the line is like a tiny Slinky your knot failed

Is it a slinky when BRAIDED breaks??

Tom- I had the distinct impression that braided was considerably stronger than nominated. Have you tested any??

Thanks Tom. And the winner was ….The Homer Circle Knot. Rebeck was best with braid. 21.3 lbs versus 18.0… homer was best with mono and flouro, breaking at 20.77 and 19.86 compared to Rebecks 16.2 and 16.45 Homer now will take on the Berkley Braid knot for the Championship.. Ill keep you posted. Wil

You can review all of the knots tested here: Knot wars

In addition and just as important is checking you line from the knot to several feet above for nicks and frays. Your line is only as strong as its weakest point and it is not always the knot.
