Mice Vs Men

OK, cooler weather is moving in and living in the middle of fields the little field mice are coming in. Traps have worked in the past but I would like to try something that will prevent them from even getting in the house.
    I heard/read that 100% peppermint oil works.
But why 100% peppermint oil? Could I use extract? Or something else with the peppermint smell? I called a store to see if they had any oil and she told me they did but she had a suggestion of peppermint schnapps. If the smell is only the thing that detours them then she would use that because you can get a large amount cheap because the 100% stuff is expensive. But she was not sure if the smell is only thing in the 100% that keeps the mice away.

If I can use schnapps then I can use it for two purposes…the old saying is ” While the mouse is away the cat will play”.

Not sure about the pepermint part but oil is about 10x stronger then extract. I use different flavored oils for bear hunting and .25 oz bottle of oil is the same as 2.5oz bottles of extract. I buy it at a local baker supply store. Grocery stores generally do not care it in oil form. Do not get it on your skin because the smell will stay on your skin for a week or more. Best traps we have found is a 5 gallon bucket, metal coat hanger wire through the top and a film container filled half way with peanut butter on the wire some anti freeze in the bucket. Lay a stick from the ground to the bucket rim. They climb the stick, down the wire, find peanut butter and upside down they go into the bucket! It will catch more then any other trap!

Use the schnapps. If you drink enough of it the mice won’t bother you.

If I used those, I would leave the house!!

To me, the best snake is a dead one….

It might be over kill, but since you suggested moth balls, I was wondering if they worked, Im going to throw some under the house.

    Yo Jen,

I’m not poo pooing anyone’s suggestion, only stating from my experience.

If moth balls get wet they give off a poisonous gas. Be careful with them. Father stopped using them in his boat for winter storage when a mouse made a home in a seat cushion inches away from his MB’s.

My neighbors at a seasonal campsite I use to frequent use peppermint oil around the ground of their camper. They swore by it. Dripped it on cardboard and placed that under the camper.

I’ve used the poison blocks for mouses kept them in places the dogs wouldn’t get at them. I could always tell when one died from it. Always had a smell for a couple days.

Those bucket traps work pretty darn well and keep on trapping.

    Good luck!

    Try the Bucket Mouse Trap

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jezQKOl5q-w

or another similar method for Chipmunks:
place a 5-gallon bucket 2/3 filled with water.
Place it next to Objects just a little higher than the bucket rim that they frequently visit.
Then pour Sunflower (cheap Bird) Seeds to fill the water surface and spread more of them outside around the top of the bucket and on ground to attract them nearby.

    Works great.

I once caught 10 of them in 2-days and still saw more running around.

Friends have told me about the bucket and can for mice.
Same water in the bucket and then stick a heavy wire through the can. Spread Peanut butter over the can. They try to get on the can, it spins and they fall in the water, Bingo.

For your Country place, you might need 3-4 of these buckets.

    Good Luck

I had the same problem, for the last two winters I have used a product called Cab Fresh, you can buy it at Tractor supply stores.
I have not had a mouse in my garage, or house for two years.
They do not even go into the garage cupboards where the wife stores her bird feed.
