I have a 150 yamaha 4 stk. And I am wondering if there is any down sides with trolling with this moter. I want to get a kicker but that won’t happen for a couple of years. Thanks for your input.

Troll with socks out. I use my 60 4 stroke as much as I can, saves on the batts! Some days I leave it running for 12+ hours a day.

September 30, 2011 at 12:58 am #998128I do believe the yammy 150 4stroke is the number one selling motor in the country. Should say something. My old tourny partner has a wx1880 and we pull core for hundreds of hours with the big motor with socks of course.

Why?
September 30, 2011 at 12:17 pm #998207Use the Cableas Brand med or large drift sock the Black one it is heavy and I got 6 years on mine and still looks new. I use it on a 1750 with a 115 4 stroke and can get to 1.3-1.7 depending on the wind.

It’ll do it short tripping especially in cold weather too.
Cure I found is to run the motor full throttle for a bit at the end of the day to get the oil temp up, also I believe they installed hotter thermostats in some too.

How does that help him troll with his Yamaha?

Maybe he uses it as a anchor to slow him down???

Cheaper to drag the guy that made the Vrod suggestion by the foot as a make-shift drift sock.
September 30, 2011 at 4:29 pm #998294I’m not concerned about the speed its weather I’ll do any damage to the moter trolling for long periods of time.
October 2, 2011 at 3:26 am #998478The F150 Yam is the motor I have, and sure dont’ think it would harm it in any way doing slow trolling. About 2- 2 1/2 mph is about as slow as you can expect, motor down.
But,
Speed is probably the biggest factor in mid to late Fall trolling, like up on Mille lacs. Warmer water you can troll faster, but as the water gets colder in late Oct and Nov you have to slow down, or you will not get many bites. Upper 30 degree temps 1 mph or slower is not out of the question. Drift socks is about the best way to get slowed down with the bigger motors.
good luck,
Jack
