Dog Repair?

So my dog got the short end of the stick chasing a squirrel around the back yard the other day. Now he has a nice gash on his front leg. It is about a inch long and deep. Wondering how to repair this. It looks to me like it needs a stitch or two or 3 or 4. With my kids the doctors usually just glue these types of wounds close.

Any idea on what I could do at home to fix this or are we going to need to take him in? Thanks for any help.

If it’s been a couple days chances are a vet won’t do anything. It’s already started the healing process. If it was right away they may do something. We’ve sewn up an animal or two in our time. Much cheaper than going to the vet. Of course we had antibiotics on hand.

Keep an eye on it for infection. Other than that – he should heal up fine. Dogs are tough. Personally, I just clean a wound like that, apply some antibiotic, and staple it shut. I bought a cheap surgical stapler and it has paid for itself tenfold……

There are 2 possible outcomes. It could get better and it could get worse. I’ve seen some pretty nasty gashes where people didn’t take them in and they were fine. Left a pretty cool scar too.

However those cases were caused by rocks or glass. Your dog is up to date on its rabies shots, right?

my dog got what sound like a similar injury bird hunting a few years ago. i thought it would heal on its own but, after a few days i took her in to the vet to see what they think. they cleaned the wound cut around the edges and stitched it up i think it ran about 300 buck. they also said it would have never healed on its own.

a vet would have to re-braid the wound and throw a couple of stitches across the top. the wound heals from the bottom up. i’d just watch it and feel it for infection heat. pretty low risk, i’d guess. if you want to squirt it with an antibiotic cream it won’t hurt, but most will end up in the dogs stomach unless you put on an EC. keep us posted.

ive always let small cuts like that heel on there own on my dogs usually put some neosporn on them when i am going to be around them for a while so i can stop them from jsut licking it off a few times ive had to rap the wound for parts of the dy to keep some antibacterial on the wound but you dont want to keep it rapped 24/7 it wont ever heel as quickly. good luck

Put some antibotic cream of some sort and try Coban wrap. You might want to check fleet farm as they carry a great deal of necessities for cattle, horses and many other animals.
    Watch for infection for sure.
    Good luck

I’m not a dog but I did have a good-sized squirell bite on my hand a few years ago. My wife looked online and got all panicky – there is supposedly a certain type of infection from squirell-family animal bites that’s really bad.

So I went to the doc. He said to watch it and keep it clean….co-pay of $25 = 3 crankbaits….last time I take medical advice from my wife’s online “research”.

Thanks guys. Think we will keep a eye on it and maybe make a trip to fleet farm for a few items. It looks to me that he got it with the sharp end of a stick while chasing the squirrel a hundred miles a hour across the yard. Would think very similar to maybe a small barb wire fence cut. I keep telling him those squirrels and chipmunks in our back yard have his number and are setting him up good. Might be BB gun time to even the playing field.

Dogs are tough. As noted, keep it clean and watch it to see what happens. If you see any signs of infection, get him in, but if not the dog will be fine.

We all know Bitches love scars.

Sorry, bad pun but I just could not let it go
