Was watching the Sports Show last night and Pat Reusse made a observation on Mauer. He is convinced there is something very serious the Twins are hiding from us. He believes Mauer has some medical situation that is leading to all the mysterious ailments he has had this year. His other point is the Twins have thrown Mauer under the bus by hiding this information and letting Mauer take the fall for all the problems.

I know there are guys here who don’t like Reusse. I’m not one of those people. In my mind he knows baseball better then any other writer in town and better then most of the national guys. His only problem is he doesn’t kiss over at Twins headquarters so it may take awhile for him to get the story, but he will get it!!

It will be interesting to see how this washes out this winter.

As far as I know from my inside source Nothing is really wrong other than never playing a position other than catcher his entire career. Now with that said Even the Maure camp has started to talk to him about getting him to move out from behind the plate for good. Thats not going well.

with catcher being the hardest posistion and 1st base being the easiest to play. i gotta believe its something more than a new posistion. there is definately something goin on.

Inside source? Inside where? Twins offices or the Mauer family?

Johnny Bench, Jason Varitek, Mike Piazza just to name 3 all played their whole careers behind the plate. They were able to handle it.

I had walking pneumonia a few years ago, very similar to what Mauer has. 3 days after getting drugs I was right back to where I was before being sick. No…..there is more wrong here then catching as a position.

I agree that joe is hurt and we do not know all the facts. Hope he can get his issues behind him this winter and be ready to go next summer.

I wasn’t being a smart a$$. Where is your source? My only point in this is Mauer shouldn’t be the one taking the PR hit on this if he has something really wrong with him. Playing catcher isn’t what this season was about or at least nobody truly believes that. Time for the Twins or Mauer himself to let the fans know what is going on. I’m sure season ticket renewal forms are being printed as we type.

I’m his source. If you want me to have Mauer call you personally Dutch, I’ll let him know.

First renewal payments for season tickets are due on Monday, one week from today.

If there is something seriously wrong with him, I would not fault him for not making it public immediately as he comes to grips with it and determines what it might mean long term.

But, every player has a bad year. Let’s hope that’s all it was. Walking pneumonia, playing catcher, bad knee, whatever , everybody recovers differently.

I think we need to introduce a new word into the vernacular.

    Mauer

    MauÂșer [mah-wer]

    • to not feel 100% healthy and not know what is wrong
    • to be ill and have others misdiagnose the ailment on purpose
    • to be given another less strenuous job with the hopes that you will finally be able to perform and be healthy

Help me out guys, I am at work here. I don’t want to be known as the Mauer of the company.

Ahh, thats my point exactly. We don’t know what is wrong. If it’s serious and Mauer doesn’t want to tell us I’m fine with that. However if the Twins are covering something up I’m not fine with that. He is the biggest sports star this state has produced in any sport. He was a star in high school and was the #1 rated quarterback in the nation. He also was the #1 overall pick in baseball. I don’t like the way his reputation is being tarnished over this injury thing. If he is milking it then so be it. He gets what he gets. But, if this is career threatening or worse I think the public should know so they get off his back.

Yes, Eric people come back from bad years. But in most cases it was caused by one injury. This has been a cluster _____ of different injuries and sicknesses and excuses all year long.

Yep, thats what I did. And, you always make a point!!

    So, will the Wild have……….

    A) More wins then loses.

    B) More ties then wins

What can we expect from them this year? I’m not much for teams getting into the play-offs with lots of points from this phony point for a overtime loss. If you lose no matter when you shouldn’t be rewarded.

Maybe I’m just to old school.

No, I hate the scoring system and the stupid shootout. I’d rather see them go to 3 on 3. A team can squeak ahead of another in the standings just because they have guys who are good in 1-0 break away drills.

I compare it to having a home run hitting contest if it is tied after 9 in baseball.

Or a game of horse to break a tie in basketball.

How about a longest field field goal competition for the win in football.

The Wild should be improved this year. Dany Heatley might just put up the same points as the last 2 years, but that’s ok. Devin Setoguchi may have a break out year, since his role and time on the ice will go up. Finally a legitimate first line with players to surround Koivu with to play.

With Bouchard and Latendresse healthy his year, we now have a legit second line too.

We’ve always been a team of good 3rd and forth liners, but this year they will actually not have to play on the top two lines, so that is good too.

That leaves us with the defense, the biggest question mark in my book. However I think Fletcher has made the right moves and if not, we have enough prospects that some should be able to step up.

I really think Yeo is going to be a heck of a coach.

I’m still a huge mauer fan, just like to see him perform up to HIS ability. Its not like they are battling for a playoff spot. A healthy mauer and morneau would be nice. But we still need pitching.

Honestly I think our best hope is the lynx or the t wolves. I don’t think the wild will do anything for a few years.

I got two PMs, so I best clarify now. No, I do not know Mauer personally.

I thought I put a graemlin in that post?

I think many athletes today don’t let on to what is bothering them during the season in hopes that teams don’t take further advantage of it. Minor wrist and ankle injuries that appear so benign in print but have huge affects on baseball players they don’t want in public forum.

He could also have what I went through at that age, eyesight issues. In HS and college I could see the laces spinning on the baseball and knew what the pitch was and where the ball was likely to go. After working in an office setting and staring at a computer all day, my eyesight went to heck and for several years I could not figure out why I wasn’t hitting like I did in college.

This type of thing doesn’t jump out at you cause you pass eye tests just fine. It’s subtle.

Many things that could bother a player that don’t seem like major injuries but drop your level of play significantly.
