What do you guys do to keep your leeches fat and healthy? What do you feed them?

Is it just in the fall that you need to feed them ? I have “kept” leeches from opener, mid-may until early July ??? Easily 7-8 weeks, with no food ???

Sometime mid june i put a bait bucket into the fridge with 4 doz minnows and 4 doz leeches.

and i FULLY INTENDED to change the water on them every 2 days. AND did the first week.

Well, after a bit longer without changing it, i just didn’t want to ‘do the cleaning…’

Well, Sept15, wednesday, finally had to have the space in the fridge…

The minnows, well, there were as expected.

The leeches?? Lost 4 leeches out of the whole 4 dozen.. Gotta figure they were eating minnows…

I keep leeches over the winter every year… Keep something in the tank for them to use to rub their slime off (I use mosquito netting)… Dont need to feed them… Just dont buy them to early in the fall, leeches die after they spawn… Gotta try to find non-spawners in the late fall (right now)… Aerate them if you can or change water regularly..
