I just downloaded PdaNet. If I have unlimited data then this is free…correct? Why would anyone pay for wi-fi on their device then? How does Verizon or other wireless providers let this fly?
This might be the coolest thing my cell phone can do.

The free version won’t allow you to make purchases if I recall. It’s not as fast as other wireless…at least at my camper, but it’s MUCH better than nothing!
It is slower and supposedly carrier have been cracking down on people. So if your phone does not come stock with a tethering app or hotspot, there is a possibility of consequences. Not saying they would figure it out, but there is a chance. There is also a chance you could win the lottery.

That would be a nice addition.
Bet there’s an app for it too.
I believe it’s best to know who your carrier is, atnt is cracking down, thus far sprint appears safe with normal usage, I do believe the generally warn you, but be aware of the consequences. I have my phone rooted and use a wifi teether ap quite often not problems thus far, back in the past I did get a warning letter from sprint when I managed several gigs on a 2g connection in multiple months. Verizon has actually banned the application is use.
As I see it in already pay for unlimited data, how is it up to them to say how I can use it.
Generally speaking my tethering these days is pretty light on data useage I can do enough data usage with my computer now, and do 90% of my surfing, nexflix, Pandora and Slacker radio on my phone, I haven’t. Really looked, but ill bet im in the 3-5 gig range each month.
I’m with Nick. I’ve been using it for a year with no problems through Sprint. I don’t use it a ton but is handy when needed. To me it’s just a reason to charge you more for what you are already paying for. I also rooted my phone and cause use it as a wireless hot spot. The main time I use it is when the family travels so the kids can play on the internet while driving.
PdaNet works fine, it will be slightly slower. The biggest downfall is that is does not support SSL. In other words, you can’t go to sites that start with https:// So what BK said about not being able to make purchases. Most online stores use https. As a side not, if they don’t use https, don’t use them. https stands for secure, if it is http your credit card and other personal information is going across the net un-encrypted.
Ugh.. Yeah Verizon may say they are unlimited but they aren’t. You can give it a shot, but you are dealing with one of the worst companies when it come to this. AT&T and Verizon are terrible about this kind of thing. and If you exceed 2Gig, which depending on how you use it isn’t that hard to o, expect a letter.

I have an original droid that is rooted and I use Wifi tether all the time with zero problems from Verizon. I think the letters from Verizon is a myth, I have yet to actually see one that someone has received.
Maybe, a myth, but we’ll within their power, tread lightly.
You can always buy the paid version of pda net if you want or need secure sites, $30, is still really cheap.
I doubt it’s that much of a myth, It’s a “feature” that All companies Charge for, and even with that All companies Minus sprint Monitor your usage, and when you exceed what they limit you too they Throttle your speed down. Everyone is paying attention to AT&T to see if they can get away with their Data tiers. Which , in about a month or so will be pointless. as I think Sprint is going to pick up a few users when a 4G iPhone is introduced on the only non limited, currently, carrier. But thats a different conversation.
