Len,
I have a Canon SD450 digital camera and I’ve tried to take closeups like that without much success. Any suggestions on lighting, flash, zoom, whatever? Do you use a tripod? I keep getting the “you’re hands are shaking too much” warning from my camera which either means a tipod or less coffee…
Thanks!

Use the macro setting, no flash (the camera probably won’t even let you use a flash with the macro on), no zoom, and a tripod. The tripod really helps, especially if the lighting isn’t great or if your hands aren’t super steady.
I’ll have to dig through my hard drive at home. I have some neat bug shots somewhere.
September 13, 2011 at 4:46 pm #994548Thanks Ralphie. I want to take pictures of some of the Atlantic Salmon flies I’ve been tying. Fake bugs, same problem.

Yeah, but at least you don’t have to worry about them moving!September 13, 2011 at 5:05 pm #994560I should have a few at home. I might even have to click the “watch this thread” button on this one.
There is one very cool bug that I will have to show. I am going to guess no one here has seen them, even though they exist in Minnesota/Wisconsin.
They used to appear every year, but I must have missed them this year. Stay tuned.
Ralph speaks the truth. Even low end digital cameras take awesome close ups of small things in macro mode. I have a camera that is probably over 6 years old that runs on AA batteries that even takes incredible close ups. Even better than my better, newer camera.
September 13, 2011 at 7:36 pm #994607I’ve seen the orange/black ones on the milkweed plants this summer. Anyone know what they are? I thought only the monarch larvae would chow on milkweed.
barcSeptember 14, 2011 at 12:52 am #994661I think I IDed Sweet’s caterpillar.
He will have to verify that is it. Hard to tell from his picture.
September 14, 2011 at 12:53 am #994663Well, I have a whole bunch to show if people are interested. I think I will do one or 2 a day. I’ll start out with the one I teased about earlier. Anyone want to guess the name?
September 14, 2011 at 2:15 am #994691I have hands as soft as a women. I mean, as smooth as a baby’s butt. Ugh! As soft and smooth as a plump flatheads belly.

Yup thats the one. THanks Pug I hadn’t gotten around to looking it up yet.
September 14, 2011 at 2:05 pm #994768In my investigating, I did come across a moth caterpillar that also eats milkweed, for whoever was wondering.
I think I have seen those Sphinx moths before. Very cool looking.
September 15, 2011 at 12:53 pm #994986Wish the quality was better, but I believe I used the phone for this photo.
I give you, Moth with a Mohawk.
September 17, 2011 at 10:19 pm #995478Here’s my attempt at some closeup shots. These are Salmon and Steelhead flies I tied.

September 17, 2011 at 11:04 pm #995485Hey Pug, the first one is a pink hula skirt fly and the last two are a goose down cotton moth, I’m hopeing I’m close.
September 22, 2011 at 2:34 pm #996602Whoops, I kind of forgot about this thread. I’ll have to get more pictures up.
Looking at the apple, it reminded me of a few weeks back fishing raspberry island in St Paul. There were some cool looking wasps collecting water or sand or both from the same spot on the sandy shore.
I wish I got a picture, but there were people around. I didn’t want to take the chance of being spooked by one and then screaming like a girl.
These were pretty cool looking. They had a paper wasp shape basically, with maybe slightly shorter legs. They didn’t have the yellow and black stripes. They were kinf of a copper color.
My best Google search turned up Golden Digger wasps, but it said they were solitary. But they kind of looked like them just the same.
