    Len,

I have a Canon SD450 digital camera and I’ve tried to take closeups like that without much success. Any suggestions on lighting, flash, zoom, whatever? Do you use a tripod? I keep getting the “you’re hands are shaking too much” warning from my camera which either means a tipod or less coffee…

    Thanks!

    Rootski,

Use the macro setting, no flash (the camera probably won’t even let you use a flash with the macro on), no zoom, and a tripod. The tripod really helps, especially if the lighting isn’t great or if your hands aren’t super steady.

I’ll have to dig through my hard drive at home. I have some neat bug shots somewhere.

Thanks Ralphie. I want to take pictures of some of the Atlantic Salmon flies I’ve been tying. Fake bugs, same problem.

Yeah, but at least you don’t have to worry about them moving!

I should have a few at home. I might even have to click the “watch this thread” button on this one.

There is one very cool bug that I will have to show. I am going to guess no one here has seen them, even though they exist in Minnesota/Wisconsin.

They used to appear every year, but I must have missed them this year. Stay tuned.

Ralph speaks the truth. Even low end digital cameras take awesome close ups of small things in macro mode. I have a camera that is probably over 6 years old that runs on AA batteries that even takes incredible close ups. Even better than my better, newer camera.

I’ve seen the orange/black ones on the milkweed plants this summer. Anyone know what they are? I thought only the monarch larvae would chow on milkweed.

    I think I IDed Sweet’s caterpillar.

    Sphinx Moth

He will have to verify that is it. Hard to tell from his picture.

Well, I have a whole bunch to show if people are interested. I think I will do one or 2 a day. I’ll start out with the one I teased about earlier. Anyone want to guess the name?

I have hands as soft as a women. I mean, as smooth as a baby’s butt. Ugh! As soft and smooth as a plump flatheads belly.

In my investigating, I did come across a moth caterpillar that also eats milkweed, for whoever was wondering.

I think I have seen those Sphinx moths before. Very cool looking.

Whoops, I kind of forgot about this thread. I’ll have to get more pictures up.

Looking at the apple, it reminded me of a few weeks back fishing raspberry island in St Paul. There were some cool looking wasps collecting water or sand or both from the same spot on the sandy shore.

I wish I got a picture, but there were people around. I didn’t want to take the chance of being spooked by one and then screaming like a girl.

These were pretty cool looking. They had a paper wasp shape basically, with maybe slightly shorter legs. They didn’t have the yellow and black stripes. They were kinf of a copper color.

My best Google search turned up Golden Digger wasps, but it said they were solitary. But they kind of looked like them just the same.
