I’ve seen advertisements in fishing magazines for a long time for tools at very low prices and I’ve always been skeptical of quality. Now that there is a Harbor Freight Tools store in Rochester I’d like to hear opinions on quality of their wares. Sure you always need to be selective and buy some stuff from Sears, etc. but is it worth stopping in for some stuff?

If you pic and choose carefully you can find some good deals out there. So far all I have bought is black tape, heat shrink wire connectors, zip ties, tool cart and a heat gun, if you buy Pittsburgh brand tools I dont think you will go wrong on most of them. Pittsburgh tool has been around for a long time.
Take your time and look around every isle and corner and choose wisely and you will go home satisfied you made a good purchase.

September 2, 2011 at 12:25 am #992476Not sure about the store, but at work we ordered a 10,000 lb winch on line, for a car trailer. It burned out in less than 6 months.(no way were we pulling more than 10,000K) 2 months ago I ordered replacement parts…. still waiting… When I call, I am pretty sure it is India or something like that We also bought a sawzall, not sure of brand, but it was orange…JUNK… I would imagine hand tools would be ok.. but I will steer clear in the future
September 2, 2011 at 12:28 am #992477Many items are ok but I would be very careful of the power tools unless they are a name brand.
September 2, 2011 at 12:34 am #992482I went and looked… I knew it (the sawzall) was a play on Milwaukee Power tools name… they call theirs Chicago I’d stick with the Crews tools
September 2, 2011 at 12:43 am #992483i’ve bought a maschette for clearing brush and year end raspberries that works great, also a half inch central elect. drill for a tile set, grout mixer that’s been running for 3 years. Can’t expect longevity out of cheap tools though. If you need that go with Delta.
Palerider77Posts: 630September 2, 2011 at 1:03 am #992486It is yet another merchant peddling Chinese junk. If you need a single use tool, go ahead. If you care about quality and defeating the lowest bidder mentality that is destroying this country, buy American.

This is Harbor Freight to a T. You buy the tool there for one job. If it lasts that job and you still have it, you win.
Bought a battery charger there and it almost burned my garage down. They replaced it, but I will not let the thing out of my sight while running. That’s Harbor Freight.
September 2, 2011 at 2:40 am #992514Thanks everyone. Always trust your gut I guess. If I need a tarp or shrink tubing I may stop in otherwise Fleet Farm is where it’s at.
September 2, 2011 at 3:23 am #970189Marty was the Harbor Freight guy. He got let go a couple of years ago when the company was a shambles (trouble at the top). It is chinese knockoffs. And like others have said it is hit and miss on quality.

You might be able to cut a couple drain holes if aluminum foil but they are so cheap that that would dull them. They tend to be very brittle too so if you are using them as they are intended to be used you won’t be a happy camper.
Just another sub-Walmart store full of junk in my opinion.
RagerunnerPosts: 30September 2, 2011 at 3:27 pm #992536I go to many hardware shows and Harbor Freight is always the butt of all jokes. As many have stated, it’s a one-time use, knock-off company. I do not support companies like this, but then again, I work for an American manufacturer.
