I’m doing a bit of research and I would like all of you to give me your inputs on the following questions, Please.

What is the year of your vehicle?

1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton truck?

What liter size motor do you have?

    Diesel or Gas?

What rear end gear ratio (if known)?

    Miles per gallon fuel consumption:
    mpg Highway?
    mpg Intown?
mpg Pulling a trailer and an approx total gross trailer weight?
How well does it pull your trailer?

I would appreciate any and all honest answers. If you wish I could call you directly and save you the time typing and filling in the blanks.
This is not, and has not any thing to do with “my truck is better than your truck” so lets please just keep to answering the questions.
Mama has me thinking about making a change and I would like to know what is going on in the real world.

    Not sure on the tranny.
    11-12MPG highway, and pulling a Ranger 620.
    Probably 8-10MPG in city.

Truck pulls great, plenty of passing power even at 147K clicks. This is my second truck of that model. No motor or tranny issues.

How well does it pull your trailer? I don’t even know its being towed. I have 180k on the motor and it has never downshifted once while pulling. Its been all over the Mid-west and canada without any hesitation. I would buy this truck again in a heartbeat.

    2001 Chevy 1500HD with a 6.0L gasser and 3.73 gears.

I averaged the last 43 tanks of gas over the last 4 months.

    11.68 MPG overall average (Range 9.33 – 16.75)

    10.25 MPG city average (Range 9.33 – 12.5)

    12.94 MPG highway average (Range 11.467 – 16.75)

    10.34 MPG towing average (Range 9.33 – 11.10)

I used to hate the downshifting. However after doing these calculations you’ll notice it really didn’t affect the MPG all that much. The downshifting is just irritating to listen to, but doesn’t affect the pocket book that much.

My boat fully loaded weighs in at about 3600#. Obviously you’ll see more downshifting when running 75 MPH vs. 55 MPH. Also not using cruise helps with less downshifting. Of course looking at the numbers, you’ll see cruise or no and 55 MPH vs. 75 MPH doesn’t affect MPG that much. The question comes down to what is your time worth.

    2009 Silverado 1500 (1/2T) Crew cab 4WD

    5.3L Gas V8 – 3.42 axle 6 spd transmission

I can’t answer them exactly as desired as I’ve only had it just under 2 months:

MPG not pulling – drive a mix of highway and city (if La Crosse qualifies as city driving) to work each day and have been getting a tank average of 18 to 19 MPG.

Pulling boat – only made 1 haul of any length and got 14.5 with the wind and 13.8 against the wind (was windyer the day going into it than going with it), boat is a 16′ tracker I’d guss to be ~1500-2000lbs based on the weights shown for the new model of same boat.

Complaints – none yet as far as pulling. I did have to extend my safety chains and electrical lines though, fortunately I noticed it before I was leaving to go somewhere. I’d say it pulls the boat ‘better’ as far as a smooth ride goes but I’m comparing a near new vehicle to one with 100000miles of wear and tear.

My last truck, 2004 ext. cab 1500 silverado 2WD with 5.3L V8 and 3.73 axle with 4 spd transmisison got 16-18 mpg in summer and 13-15 winter under same conditions as above. Not pulling down the highway I got it close to 20 mpg. That truck didn’t drop much at all pulling the same boat, maybe 1-2 mpg at the most.

Not so much of answer to all of your questions, but just something I saw last week on our trip up to Rainy Lake. I have an 04 F150 and I get around 15 mpg on the hwy and pulling the boat it will go down to about 12. We pulled my boat up with my buddy’s 2010 Silverado and when both the F150’s were ready to fill up we were still over 1/4 tank in his Silverado. I was impressed

    1/2 ton Yukon GMC Denali
    6.0 Liter Gas

I get 13-15 mpg or 11-12 pulling the boat. It is all wheel drive, so that doesn’t help the gas mileage. It pulls the boat great and has plenty of power to climb hills and pass vehicles.

2007 Dodge 2500 Cummins Diesel 6 speed manual 4wd. (Bought the Cummins – the truck came with it) -78,000 miles.
    Best mileage ever – 21 @ 60-65 mph – 17 @ 75 mph.
Town: 15 mph – Lot of town driving and I have to take it out for a 10 mile 60 mph run to clean out the the afterburner.
    Towing Lund 1850 Tyee – 15 – 16 mph
Towing boat and Lance pickup camper – 11 – 14 mph
Note: Do a lot of longer distance driving to go fishing and wind is a big factor out here – always seems that I am going against it when towing….
Lots of torque – more than enough – I bet I could lay rubber in 3rd or 4th.
We have been having quite a few hail storms and I’m wondering if all of the dimples on the truck will result in less drag – sort of like a golf ball.
