Lost my best friend at Everts today

When Riley was about 11 months old, he was found along a roadside abandoned in IA. He was taken to the dog pound where after 7 days all dogs were put to sleep if they couldn’t find a home.

This dog pound took pride in always finding a home for it’s dogs. In fact, they have never put a dog down…

But it wasn’t looking so good for our friend Riley.

On the six day, the Brian Lyons family came to the rescue. I’m not sure if they wanted a dog, but they took him anyway.

A quote from Brian “Bringing him home was one of my best moves. He has been a godsend to our family. Riley has never met anyone who didn’t deserve a dog kiss.”

The only time I’ve ever seen Riley get out of line was at the 2007 Get2Gether. Someone left him too close to the beer.

Riley has been a mascot, no.. a friend to anyone that’s ever stopped into the resort. I know when I came down he would make his rounds and always come over for an ear scratch.

“Good Dog” just doesn’t fit here. Good friend works much better.

This morning between 1 and 5 am, Rileys’ big old heart just gave out.

Damn, we’re going to miss you friend.

I have never had a dog of my own as an adult and I can only imagine how this can touch anyone who has met Riley..

Sorry for your loss Brian. I know exactly how you feel. I’m sure you gave him a very fulfilling life after saving him from what could have been a very short one. Thanks.

Sorry to hear your buddy passed. It would appear that Riley completed his appointed job, Being man’s best friend. For doing that Riley gained your friendship and respect in his passing. I have and continue to be harsh in some things in life but Rileys’ has managed to create a very large lump in my throat. Darn it!

Losing a friend like that is very tough. I lost my lab of 14 years this may, and it hasnt been the same without having him around. RIP riley

What terrible news My thoughts and prayers are with the Lyons family. I saw Riley a month or two ago and he was maybe moving a little slower but he was the same gentle friendly pal he had been for years. The second picture above is my grand daughter Codi and she had just met Riley the day before and he befriended her just like he had so many others that came to the resort when he was there. RIP Riley—-you will be missed by many.

Pug, there is a story behind the picture. At the time the picture was taken James,Eric and I believe Dustin were in the boat giving a seminar on trolling cranks on Pool 4. There were probably close to a hundred people standing around behind where the picture was taken and most were dividing their attention between James talking and Riley and Codi snuggling. Riley was definitely a very special friend to many people at the resort—heck, he even liked BK.

A rescue dog never forgets that it was abandoned. It also never forgets who rescued it. RIP good dog…
