I had Burris Prostaff obligations this weekend at Cabelas, in Richfield, WI. Had a young man come up to the gun counter in a wheel chair. Legs were blown off, arms mangled up, and for a lack of a better description, looked like a tin can crushed between a couple semi trucks.
But what an inspiration to talk to him. I got to spend about 20 minutes talking/thanking him for his service. It was obvious his sacrifice and I still can only imagine what that type of change to ones life would be like. But his outlook was so incredible. He had an assortment of ATV accessories in a cart that his wife was pushing. He had complete plans on how he was outfitting his wheelchair for hunting this fall. Laughing about it, he made jokes about “cheating” since he can shoot from his motorized vehicle. He’ll have Ram mounts with his gun holders and a swivel shooting rest for a pistol. Kind of hard to describe all his plans. But the ingenuity and outlook he has left me awestruck. I really think if I encountered the injuries he did, I would be so far into depression that I would never rebound. Woke up this morning still thinking about how happy and excited he was for “getting put back together in time to go hunting” Inspired by a fellow IDO’r, I gave Marcus my card and invited him to a day of bass fishing as a my thank you for what he has given up for us. I really hope he takes me up on my offer. What an incredible guy!
Again, to all that have, and are serving in all branches of our services – from my family, THANK YOU!
