GM Radio Anti-Theft Issue

Hopefully someone can help me with this: I need to replace the starter on my 2006 Chevy Suburban, and my truck has an Anti-Theft radio system. The repair manual says I need to disarm the radio before I disconnect the battery or it will lock out the radio and it will not work. I bought the truck used so I do not know any code. I called a dealer and they said I need to have the battery disconnected less than 20 minutes or the radio will lock out.

Can anyone confirm this? Is there a workaround?

    Any help is appreciated.

Use a flasher battery or a battery charger and put it to the cables while the battery is disconnected, this will give the radio power and not lock it out.

Wouldn’t that be the same as having the battery in? I’m guessing he wants the battery out so the starter cables don’t arc when disconnected.

Could he unhook the battery and then tape the cables at the starter and reattach the battery to keep the radio working right?

Ah, there has to be a better way.

Find the two leads from the radios main power at the fuse box, disconnect the two lines and tape them to a 12v battery.. SLA will work. That will give the radio power while the rest of the truck is disconnected.

Right, I want to disconnect the battery so I don’t arc while changing the starter. I was hoping there is some sort of code I can press into the radio to disarm the radio. That would be an easy way, right? I don’t want the Anti-Theft anyway.

Or you can go to a auto parts store and get a battery backup and what is its a 9 volt battery plug that goes into the 12 aux lighter socket….

Several web posts say that I do not need to worry about the radio as long as it is the same vehicle that it originally came in. Aparently the radio and other electric components check the VIN number automatically when you turn the key to on, and as long as it reads the correct VIN it will be ok. Can anyone confirm? I’m disconnecting the battery anyways and will live with the end result but I am curious.

I’ve replaced the battery in my ’07 Tahoe and never did anything special so I’m thinking this is correct info as I never had a problem.

should be a non issue. you should research reprogramming code for stereo and post results here. that would be a good one.
dealers unhook batteries all the time, never a problem.

I did the work last night and the radio came back up just fine. Of course, what appeared to be a simple starter replacement became a major pain in the [censored], sice I could not get the starter out without having to do some magic with the transmission lines, solenoid shield, etc. I tried and tried to jiggle it out and could not get the damn thing out from the truck. I put it back in and left it for now.

    It’s always something
