BWCA walleyes

    Hey Guys,
Planning a family camping/fishing trip in the BWCA August 10-15. This trip will include my 2 year and 12 year old Grand daughters. I am excited! It is a short canoe to where we will stay and there has been good fishing for walleyes on this lake for us in the past. Mostly using leeches of crawlers with Lindy type rigs or slip bobbers. I am considering getting away from the live bait option for this trip and am wondering how folks are doing with some of the plastics. Gulp or Trigger X come to mind. The Moxie has caught some walleyes for me this season on a jig. The Lake is long and narrow. Good structure and lots of depth in places. There is also a small slow moving River that we have canoed up and caught some walleyes shallow in the weeds. Any thouughts or advice? Will the fake leeches do any good on a slip bobber? We will of course bring a few crankbaits but tell me your favorites of those also.
    Thanks!

We salt minnows when we do our fly-ins. Not “live bait” per say, but effective. I’ve heard good things about the gulp just seems too expensive for my tastes, especially with the volume of fish you can get up north.

gulp leeches under a bobber work great
We hook them in the middle with a plain hook rig
or in the end with a small jig works too
They work on lindy rigs also as do the minnows
we just give them a slight twitch once in a while to add a little more movement while drifting/slow trolling
they last long enough to get several fish on each bait,
so for us they are cost effective and don’t DIE (LOL)

Each time I go, I bring less artificial bait. Leeches is the way to go imo. Rig with a hook and split shot or fish under a bobber.

I’ve had decent luck trolling cranks along shore lines.

I would suggest bringing live bait into the BWCA if you plan to slip bobber fish or use lindy rigs for walleye. In June you might be able to get by using Gulp baits but for an August trip I would think you would do better with crawlers and/or leeches(if you can find them this late). We only use the Gulp baits when we have to in the Quetico Park. They are convenient but they are expensive and they smell awful!
    Good luck fishing.
