OK, so for most of you this may be basic knowledge but to me it isn’t and I’m looking for a little help. I have an update for my 998 and I should remove the old info off my sd card before loading the new update how is that done? This card is used only for updates, how is it done using only my computer, thanks

SD or mini SD? SD is about 1″ vs mini SD 1/4″

You can buy an adapter at almost any electronics store that will plug into a USB port on your computer. stick the card in and go to “my computer” you will see the SD card there, double click to open it then erase the files.

If you have a newer laptop chances are there is a slot on it where the card will fit right in, then you can open it in “my computer”

Pop it in your sd port, double click on the sd Icon, select and drag everything to your trash.

    That should do it.

Personally I would drag the info to your desktop, then move it to a safe location. Never can have too many back ups of your waypoints ect. (assuming you’ve saved your waypoints to your sd card)

I assume you have downloaded the new update know where the file/s are saved? Now, pop in your SD card into the reader. You should now see an extra/removable disk drive when you open the My Computer icon. Open up that drive letter. If you want, you can delete the files on there. However, I’d suggest just cutting them and pasting them into a folder on your desktop. Now copy the new download to the SD card/new drive letter.

I’ve made several assumptions, so if the above needs more clarification let us know.

I put the card in and it came up to removable disk G it had an older update on it so I right clicked and deleted it, the computer blinked alot I assume it was removing that file. I then downloaded the new update and made a shortcut to my desktop, then I right clicked from my desktop and sent to removable disk G I think this will work but won’t know until tomorrow, thanks for your help Pk

If you want the card wiped clean put it in your computer. Go into “my computer” and right click on the drive that is your SD card. Choose “Format” from the drop down menu. That will wipe it.

The SD does not have to have older updates removed. The HumminBird will load the latest one. I leave the last two on the card and archive the updates prior to that on the PC using techniques already discussed here.

Be care full doing the format. Windows 7 and Vista can raise havoc with some of the older depth finders. The card probably needs to be formated FAT32. If you have a working card do not format it to clean it up. Move the files to your Computer and you should always save the old update because the new update may break a feature you use.
