The Feds actually implanted micro chips in several breed females in Bays de Noc (Green bay) to catch a ring of 5 men (4 Native Ams) here that took an estimated 700,000 lbs of large walleye ( over $8,000,000 mkt value) out and sold them to restaurants etc over a period of 6-7 years.
They got $3000 fines and lost their tribal netting lic for a couple years…chgs were not filed against those businesses that bought the illegal walleye
I’ve seen only a Pioneer Press story on it, and from the looks of it, this will be pretty big since no one from DNR or USFWS is commenting on it yet. Will be interested to see a news release including law enforcement’s response. Sit tight, I think we’ll be happy with this one!
Soooo, our gov. spent several thousand dollars to implant tracking chips, to trade 8 million dollars worth of fish for 3 thousand in fines and a loss of 5 license sales for a few years?
Where’s that shoot yourself in the foot icon when you need it?
Those figures don’t seem right Tom. 700,000 lbs of walleye only worth $8,000.00??

You’re short a few zeros Chris. 3 to be exact.
$8 mil and 700K lbs equals 11.42/lb Didn’t know they got that much for it.
It will be interesting to see what flushes out. I am getting a lot of hear-say from relatives up North that the town of Grygla saw lots of uniforms – but with very little arrests.
I woulkd tend to agree that it will end up in tribal court and that will be about the end of it.
Might be about the same in US courts also.
