That link does not work. (The Pioneer Press website makes it tough to link to unless you are a registered member)

However, there are already 2 posts on this topic in the musky forum.

…and it sounds like the kid is a class act, my favorite kind of fisherman. He doesn’t care about the record, he is just grateful for the experience and the memories are enough for him!

Whoops, he had it mounted. Well he tried for hours to revive it, good enough for me.

    Here is the link.

I’m not the only musky guy that is rolling his eyes.

Not a record fish. It’s a monster, but it’s not a record. If you punch in the numbers and do the calculations using the accepted formula Length x Girth x Girth/800, a 54.5-55 lb fish of that length would have to have a 27.5″ girth. That is NOT a 27.5″ girth. Maybe in the fall when she had a belly full of tulibees she’d be a record, but not right now.

I smell a little jealousy. The kid cared more about releasing it than holding the state record.

Who wouldn’t be jealous of a fish like that?

If what everyone is saying is true, the other 4 mounted muskies on his wall (this will be his 5th) lend creedence to the fact that he either cares nothing about C&R or that he’s absolutely horrendously incompetent at reviving and releasing fish.

The article says he fought the fish for 15 minutes. Obviously that’s an exaggeration unless he was trying to kill the fish. Even 5 minutes is too long to fight a muskie. Our gear is made so we can horse ’em in the least amount of time and with the least amount of energy expended by the fish.

If it inhaled a Dawg, there’s not much you can do. Perhaps he truly intended to release this fish . The fact that he’s from Arizona and only comes here periodically and now has 5 trophy muskies on the wall tells us the real story.

Maybe it’s only the trophies that inhale baits and commit suicide. 40 inchers always take it in the lip.

Last weekend I caught a 22 1/2 pound walleye, it was 38″ long, but since the state was shutdown I released it.. as that is what mattered to me most, to let the fish swim, because I “care” so much

Did you spend 6 hours trying to revive it like this guy claims?

6 hours on a stringer maybe.

No.. because I am such a great guy and “care” I measured, weighed it, with 3 different scales (all were the same) and immediately released it, because I knew that the state was shutdown and there was no way to become famous (which I didn’t really care about either) but quite honestly, I don’t know how all the media got my story, because I really didn’t care ???

It was weighed on 2 scales. One said 51, the other 50. A certified scale won’t add another 5lbs. It’s as much a record as that “rock bass” was.

Many bigger skis have been released over the past few years.

    An awesome fish though!

The thing is they are trying to blame the shutdown on the fish not being the new record. All this guy had to do was find a certified scale and get the fish weighted with witnesses and maybe even a notary. Heck call a CO as a witness. He could have kept the fish in a freezer, maybe at the taxidermist, and when the shutdown was over get the fish certified by the DNR. There’s a form to fill out and sign and the DNR rep signs it too. Not a big deal.

NO need to carry a form BK, I have caught 2 state records already.

I don’t need them in the books and I know that I caught them even if others say I did not.

    They were not there.

I would let you know the specie and size but others would not believe it so I will keep it too myself.

Personally I only carry them for the walleye crowd. The cat guys don’t get hung up on size. Well, maybe one does.

Is it the guy who’s avatar, that slowly over time, has been having bigger catfish pictured, as well as the actual size of the avatar itself being increased ???

I release all the records I catch. You have to have it witnessed by two people and I don’t have any friends.
