I’m selling my boat, registered in North Dakota to a party in Minnesota. What do we both need to do legally as far as title, sales tax and etc.

    No opinions here just facts.

I need to hear from you who have sold boats over $20,000 in Minnesota.

With all due respect to you wonderful folks in the Badger state and the Corn state please refrain from commenting… if you can

Sign off on the title, collect your funds, make out a bill of sale and your done. Your buyer will take your title and get the boat registered in Mn.

Thanks Derek. What would suffice for a bill of sale. Just someting stating the serial numbers and price paid?

I probabaly can’t supply the title until I pay my loan off.

Just write up something on your PC and have your bank notarize it for a bill of sale. Include the Ser# and selling price and note as is . You can have your buyer wire the funds to your bank or issue a cashiers check made out to you and your bank to release the lien card and or title.

I agree with Derek. Just did the same thing with WI boat and MN registration. Made out a Bill of Sale on the PC that listed a full description and serial #’s for the boat, motor and trailer with buyer and seller full name and address. No issues from MN standpoint on registration.

I know you do not have to pay tax on a used boat in MN from another Minnesotan, but does the Peoples Republic of Minnesota hit you up if you buy it from out of state? Just curious.

It is up to the buyer to pay the sales tax. When the register the boat the state will ask how much was paid for the boat, and they’ll tax the buyer on that amount.

If the amount sounds too low the state will compare with blue book and tax on that amount.
