Did anyone else hear about this? Sounds like Miller, Coors and 39 other beers they sell may be getting pulled from shelves due to not getting their license renewed. Might be a very hot and dry weekend.

Miller and Coors shutdown?

Yep, I heard they have 3 days to pull it off the shelves. Looks like another Nordeast weekend
July 13, 2011 at 1:39 am #980245Miller and Coors will NOT be pulled off the shelves. The Liq Stores that stock it have already paid for their inventory along with their own liq licenses (Beer has to be paid COD by the stores whereas Liquor and Wine allow 30 days to pay on)… and as my father stated (who owns one of the larger Liq stores in the state and sits on the MLBA)… the state will need a court order before they stop selling the stock that they have. it MAY be that Miller and Coors cannot sell to the liq stores. But.. most stores buy large deals that last them a month or more. Most beer is good for 90 days. In my opinion… the only shortages you will see any time soon are smaller stores that buy their stock week to week… or any stores that haven’t bought recent deals.

Nah… you are safe on the beer. BUT… you may still want to hit the ATM… sounds like the out-of-state Stink Bait and Bull-Head sellers won’t be able to stock shelves either. You not only better hit the stores now… you better have a half dozen 5 gal buckets for all the stinkbait you will need… never know how long the shut-down will last!
July 13, 2011 at 2:21 am #980262This story was on Channel 5. Thought they commented on having 3 days to arrange to pull products. What is amazing about this story is if it is right that is a lot of product to be pulled of the shelves in the state. On the other hand maybe not because Im sure a lot of people will be rushing in to buy up what they can.
Take away peoples money and they get mad. Take their beer and there could be real trouble.
July 13, 2011 at 2:30 am #980267Dave, your dad should call the local news stations that are reporting otherwise… apparently, to sell beer in MN, you need a license from the state, $30 & your good for 3 years… Miller/Coors is expired and has no way to get their license as of right now. From what I understand, it is the license to sell, not to buy from a distributor, not that they can’t fill up their beer caves with it…but that they cannot “sell” it in MN, regardless of how much they have in stock or pre-paid for. So how that can affect differently, from a small retailer to one that buys more stock, I don’t know ???? If you can’t sell one can… it really does not matter how much you have… it’s not illegal to have it, it’s illegal to sell it ???
UPDATE.. now on 11, they are reporting what your dad said Dave… they have a license to “sell” liquor, from the county or city they are in, but need a “buyers” card, to buy from wholesalers… and it’s not $30, it’s $20. Nice job channel 5….
July 13, 2011 at 2:38 am #980271I think that IF I was the store owner and I bought and paided for the Miller/Coors. I should be able to do with it as I please. Miller/Coors already distributated it to the stores and as long as I paid for it.
That is my take on what Dave was saying but I have been wrong many other times.Ron
July 13, 2011 at 2:41 am #980273This is a confusing story… why would Miller/Coors need to buy the “buyers” card…. it should be specific to the liquor/store, not to a certain brand ??? Very weird here, what 5 has on their site
Here’s their story…
The state shutdown means Miller-Coors will have to stop selling beer in Minnesota.
State officials have told the company, it must come up with a plan to remove it’s 39 brands of beer from shelves and in bars in a matter of days. The company failed to renew it’s brand license with the state before the shutdown. Each alcohol brand needs to pay a 30 dollar brand license fee. That fee is good for 3 years.
Without the license, Miller-Coors cannot sell in the state.
July 13, 2011 at 2:45 am #980274I just find it interesting that the state can’t function in order to renew the license, yet it can somehow enforce the ban? You would think that if they can fund the enforcement, why wouldn’t they be able to fund/function the renewal? Anywho, I am interested to figure out what the facts really are.
July 13, 2011 at 2:48 am #980275As I said… the Liquor stores pay up front for the beer. The day that it gets brought into the store… it is paid for and is now owned by the Liq Store. Unless the store has not renewed their Liq License… they are free to sell their stock to the public like it is any other day. I think what the news is reporting on is the Distributors… just like a liq store has to have a license… the distributors also need a license. And if they have not bought their license before the shutdown… they can no longer sell their stock to the liq stores. So… any stock that the liq stores have now… they can sell.

I say let them try to remove it from the shelves in my fridge.
I am shooting first and asking questions second.Guess, I will be drinking vodka/lemonade for a while

July 13, 2011 at 2:52 am #980278Just a quick update… I just watched the news item… and it seems to be some sort of Brand license… If this rings true… the beer companies would need to buy back the beer from all the liquor stores. Interesting. As my dad put it… they will need to come in with a court order before he will stop selling the beer. He owns it…. and has a license to sell it.
This will be interesting…

Actually, now according to what Dave posted… maybe not ???? Rest assured, if I run out of beer…. heads WILL roll….
July 13, 2011 at 11:55 am #980323That’s it! Hey Represenitives of the state of Minnesota….Get off your A$$ and get back to the table! Raise the tax on the 2% and get it done!!!
July 13, 2011 at 12:10 pm #980327I included an update above… I COULD be wrong with what I originally posted… it doesn’t sound like they are missing a license to SELL it… it is a Branding license. So, that being the case… not sure what is going to happen. The individual Liq stores OWN the stock.. so in order for them to pull it off the shelves, the BEER company (not the distributors) will have to BUY BACK the beer. That will not go over well with the store owners.

Yeah, our politicians may leave the state, but our beer knows better. If our beer disappeared, Wisconsin would implode.

Pun intended?July 13, 2011 at 12:41 pm #980347First they came for Miller, I didnt drink Miller, so I said nothing.
Then they came for Coors, I wasnt a Coors drinker, so I said nothing.
Then they came for Newcastle and Budweiser and no one was there to fight for me.
