Terrova Help

So we got a new Terrova last year on our boat. It is an 80 lb thrust on a 175 Alumacraft, should be plenty of power.

The problem is that if we are in fairly rough water, say two foot rollers, and we have to speed the motor up to 6 or 7 on the Ipilot it will constantly kick out. We are just cruising along and the motor just shuts down. Once it does it once it will constantly do it.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Do you have the 60 amp breaker and 6ga wire running to the plug?

I think he means the I-pilot stops tracking/holding position.

If so I would say all equipment has its limits…I’ve got the same motor and I’m not surpised it struggles in those conditions.

I had the same problem. The issue was that my batteries weren’t stout enough (old) so the motor was not seeing enough voltage at higher power levels and some run time. I would recommend making sure you have the right circuit breaker, wire, and a good set of batteries with a full charge. Remember that the two batteries in parallel are only as strong as the weakest of the two in terms of their current output too so its best that they be of the same vintage.

I will look into the breaker and the gauge of wire run. I do mean that the motor itself is kicking out, not that the autopilot is not able to hold me. I realize that when it gets rough you can’t expect perfection!!

Both batteries were replaced three weeks ago, so that is not the problem. My guess is that it is the breaker.

    Thanks!

Does it take a while for it to kick out? How long does it take before it will go again?

I had the same thing on my Lund… the in-line circuit breaker was not the correct size… it worked great while on the lower settings…but when I turned up the speed it would kick out…then I could turn it back on..

this continued till I got the correct in line fuse/circuit breaker put in..
