The front right brake is clamping down for some reason while I drive and pulls to the right, started 2 days ago. well, it started smoking last night so I need a new mechanic (mine is is Crystal and not easy to get to for us as we live in the Croix valley).
I got a bid to replace both of the brakes+pads and the calipers on my ’04 F150 and the bid was $650 just seems a little high, but truly I wouldn’t know.
I guess I am wondering if this sounds high or if someone knows where to get a better bid.
    Thanks for any insight IDO

depends on the price for parts! your probably looking at about half and half for labor and parts!

have you given ford a call? I had both front and rear done and ford was much cheaper than a local mechanic that I usually go to. (much to my surprise) I was able to get in right away and it was really quick.

Brakes and calipers can get spendy. I replaced both on my Chevy truck on both sides and dropped $600. The calipers were not cheap.

That was for 1 rotor on one side as it was damaged, both brake pads and both calipers.

Does not hurt to check different shops for a better rate.

Argh, I have been putting off fixing the brakes. I have someone who will do it, Michelle’s uncle, but even then I fear it won’t be cheap.

$650 it’s really too bad for front calipers/pads/rotors on a truck that size? Make sure the caliper is actually bad and it’s just not the slide pins bound up on the caliper/pad carrier if those have them? I know a lot of Fords use slide pins that get very sticky. Both my g/f and my Escort too an air hammer to free up then once cleaned worked great.

WW is probly on the correct track, many times its just the sliders and not the caliper. None the less I would wonder if the rotor has warped due to heat if they are smoking.

It all depends on mechanical ability if you can do this. Its easier and less liability for a shop to just replace it all so that what they do. Price does sound in the ball park, what is the vehicle? -Mark

I had to shell out right around $650 to get my F150’s brakes/ rotors done recently. They did last over 100,000 miles so I can’t really about it but geez, I wasn’t expecting it to cost THAT much. Sometimes I think mechanics are doing this when I drive away…

    Thanks for the replies
Ended up at Tousley, just glad to have it done on a Saturday also.
They did the job for just under $400, but also found another $1200 in rear brake issues!! The said the transmission seal is shot and leaked on the rear brake pads thus ruining them Brutal since they were just replaced recently and are practically new.
Found this link in my travels, thought you guys might find it useful: Repair Pal

Personally I just can’t pay someone to do brakes, most of the time it’s really easy work, you can easily do pads and rotors on most cars and truck for under $100 and half an hour of your time. Changing a caliper is a little more involved, but the one I had to change wasn’t a problem.

You are probably looking at $300 for parts dependant upon what “quality” you want to pay for.
It is a shade tree mechanic job for the most part. bleeding the brakes just requiers a second person to pump the brakes for you.
I can get them done myself in about 1 1/2 hours.
    Good luck

Clarence is pretty much right on the money, rebuilt calipers w/pads and new hardware run around $150 each list price and premium rotors If you need them are another $100 each which is probably why they estimated $650 including labor.

I have one dumb question….How does a rear transmission seal affect the brakes unless you ment axle seal?????????

My axle seals went bad on my Suburban. Just replaced the seals and sprayed the brakes with brake cleaner. Everything worked fine.

He probably meant the axle seals are bad, and they think they should replace the rear brake shoes/pads ect….

No whether the pads/shoes really need completely replaced…

I’m not working on the vehicle so I can’t comment.
