What are you fishing for, and what region do you fish? My 5 year old out fished me last night worming for sunnies, so maybe we need to pick our target better.
I will admit that the season seems slower than last year in the metro. But, I was on Mille Lacs July 3rd, and despite a crowd we boated about 15 eyes in the 22 – 28 inch range, 6 keeper perch, and then had fun catching smallies in the rock piles.
But, that said, I was told by two people who live on Metro lakes, that in late April they had never seen a fish “winter kill” like they saw this year. I think that is impacting the bass fishing since they particularly commented that a lot of nice bass were on the shore. Dont know why…
Well the fishing end of it is my own doings, to much going on, and hardly any time on the water.
I made a cardinal sin by going out on a launch the other night. I sat on that boat the whole night wondering why I am fishing on someone elses boat while mine is at home in the garage.
It’s just been that kind of summer for me. On the other hand there does not seem to be alot of others out fishing either.
Maybe, as was on the launch the other night, others may be in the same boat.
You think the cool spring has anything to do with it. I feel a little less motivated this year as well. I only went up to the (brother’s) cabin once and that was for opener. Haven’t been very motivated to just fish the river after work either. Of course, that has a lot to do with high water.
My nephew and I fished a huge Eddy on the Minnesota. It sure looked fishy and bait fish were jumping all over. We didn’t get a channel run or flathead run.
We did manage a little walleye. We usually bring the other poles and pre-fish to see if there is food for flatheads and to warm us up. Caught that thing right away and my nephew got excited, thinking maybe the catpoles sit idle while we catch a mess of walleye. Apparently that was the only one willing to eat.
I am thinking about grilling up some spam burgers tonight instead of fishing.

Save a fish…eat Spam!!
I think we all go thru swings in life that get in the way of fishing as much as we’d like. I spend more time on the big river than any where as a rule, but with yo-yoing water levels for the past 18 months and me having only a smaller boat, common sense has served to limit my fishing. Even Lake Zumbro has been on a high water roller coaster since last fall only there they hang out the no-wake placards and that makes navigating a long lake tough, or should I say time costly.
For me, the last couple of years have been horifically busy and fishing time has been cut into. Then add the natural limitations handed out by Mother Nature and what free time I have had to consider fishing got twarted by high water on many occasions.
The better half leaves for Spain for 12 days beginning Friday afternoon and I hope to make up for some of the down time while she is out of town and not a part of the equation.

Canned do do?
If I could do, what I can do, who would do, what I should do?
I’ll get on the ‘bad year’ bandwagon. I do most of my fishing on the Minnesota river, and it has been a solid year since the water was down at a normal level. Has been making it really hard to locate fish. The old reliable spots are not producing, and everything is high.
Oh well, life goes on, and there’s no such thing as a bad day on the river!
True. I went down to the bass ponds the other day and although I didn’t catch anything, I sure caught a lot of nature. I’ll have to post about it with pictures when I get the time. Saw turtles laying eggs, tiny toadlings, a snapping turtle, a garter snake, a giant garden snail, monarchs courting, a king bird snatch a dragon fly in mid flight and a deer. Sometimes it isn’t about the fishing at all.
FYI, it hasn’t gone yet. I am getting out tonight on Minnetonka. The nephew called and reminded me this was fishing night for him because the little lady has ballet.
Also, I think part of my funk this year has to do with the daughter graduating and finally making it to Elephant Lake at the end of the month for the annual family male bonding trip.
