Gander Mt. – You’ve seen the last penny of mine

Ok, so this is going to be a bit of a rant, but I’m done dealing with the clowns that run Gander Mountain. Do any of the people that order stuff actually fish? I stopped in tonight for one thing, and one thing only, as Gander is right on my way home. I needed some Mustad Slow Death hooks. Shouldn’t be too hard to find in an outdoors store should it?

Looked around and couldn’t find them, so I asked the fishing guy where they were. His response, “We don’t carry those anymore”. I was in a cranky mood, so I asked “Why not?” His response was “I don’t know, probably because they don’t work”. Knowing that they work or I wouldn’t be buying them, I’m a little ticked. I ask him where the 4 ounce bottom bouncers are, even though I didn’t need any and knew they didn’t carry them. He tells me they don’t carry them because if you are using a 4 ounce bouncer, you are fishing too fast. So, I ask where the rest of the Flicker Shad colors are since you only seem to have 5 colors and only 2 are any good. He said that’s all they carry because nobody buys them, they only buy Rapalas. Yet, they are always out of stock on the few flicker shads they carry. Funny they never have any since nobody buys them. He says they only carry the colors that work, and the colors they don’t carry are for bodies of water like Lake Erie, not here. He then tries to explain why I should be using shad raps instead of flicker shads. I was about ready to shove a couple shad raps up his tailpipe, but instead, I said my final words. “Obviously that clown that orders your crap doesn’t fish for walleye because you never have anything I actually need”. He had no answer.

So, to end my rant, I’m done spending a single dime in that place. It has gone to nothing more than a clothing store with some fishing and hunting stuff that I don’t need. They NEVER have what I do need. I will now have to drive 10 miles out of my way to go to somebody that wants my money and will stock what I need if I ask them to.

Ok, I’m done now. I feel better.

Not trying to upset you more but did you really expect more from a big box store? They are not going to overstaff their purchasing dept. so that each store can have area specific merchandise, it just doesn’t happen (I wish it would). They also have a much better margin on clothing so that is what gets the most real estate in the store (I also think this sucks). You just need to lower your expectations and accept them for what they are. I stop by occasionally and hope to find what I am looking for and if it’s there great, if not I go somehwere else if I really need it. It comes down to making money, maximize profits while minimizing expenditures (purchasers and low margin stock), like it or not that’s just the way it is. I could go on about this more but I expect that you were actually more upset with yourself for thinking you were actually going to find what you wanted there. Better luck next time.

I was done the last time I visited. Why would I go to Gander when they don’t carry half the stuff I want? You should have asked him about Salmo Hornets, because I didn’t see any. Ordering online from now on unless I can make it to Thorne Bros. on the other side of town. Either that or go to Fleet Farm.

I wonder what kind of agreement they have with Rapala, because I think they carry every color/model combination.

I’m with you on that one. Every time I walk in there I get frustrated with their lack of tackle. Not to mention the joke of a remodel. I swear I started getting dizzy walking circles around all those boxes they hang their baits from. Who’s the friggen genious that decided it would be a great idea to hang all the baits at chest level down to with an inch of the floor!? I’m DONE spending money in that joint. I’ll still go in there to window shop since our choices here in Madison are extremely limited when it comes to tackle shops, but I’ll buy what I need online.

Not true! I went in there specifically looking for a bluegill DT10. non-existent. Not even a spot for it. Every other color known to man in a 10, but not the one single color I throw and have confidence in.

We were looking to replace one of my wife’s baitcasters and stopped at the Gander in Woodbury, MN. Had an interesting conversation with one of the employees. The guy was very frustrated, because there are dozens of products on display that Gander doesn’t stock. That’s right…display model reels that they have out there for you to look at and the never stock any to sell you. Even the Gander private label models. This employee said he really hates telling guys like me that they don’t have the products in stock, again and again and again. I asked a manager once why they don’t stock any B-fish-N plastics, he said he never heard of it. I pointed out that they are about 3 miles from Pool 2 and they’d be able to sell a ton of the stuff and he just shrugged.

I agree with the earlier post, you have to accept it for what it is. A great place to buy clothes and don’t expect much else.

LOL, well I assumed since the Rapalas had to 360 degree displays.

Sing it with me… “Gander Mountain, Hat, Shirts, Pants”

The place pisses me off to no end. I was there just last night looking for some Northland Lindy sinkers (the old school style with the wire loop on top). They had about 60-1/4 ounce weights, 10-1/2 ounce, but no 3/8 ounce that were plain lead without color. Historically I’ve also had serious heartache with items not being marked with prices.

Unfortunately they are somewhat of a necessary evil being 1 mile from my house, but I set my expectations low every time I go there.

Biggest problem I have is actually finding somebody to wait on you, seems they’re all busy doing something. (hiding I think)

Did actually find a reasonably savy salesguy last time in there, but it’s rare.

btw the gander mountain down from Thornes has DT10’s in bluegill, least they did until I got there, but they now have a slot for them and I’m assuming they will restock..:)

Thornes was out of them, or I would have bought them there.

But ya, I don’t expect much when I go to gander, usually hit other places first.

X2. For how big of a store the Gander is in Blaine I walk out empty handed more times than buying something. You guys ever try to by snaps for attaching you crank baits to your line there. Guess if it was my store there would be many of them to choose from right next to the crank baits. At best you might find a couple of packages until they re order next spring.

Who in their right mind would have the balz to stand next to you and tell you that you should fish with a certain crank bait and that you should use another… I know I’m not the tallest biggest baddest person standing…. but I’m thinking John is right up there…

I don’t know how I would have handled that situation but I sure would not have told Mr. Schultz that he didn’t know how to fish his own waters

Sounds like you were having one of them days John, we all have them at times and it sure can make a guy growly

Having one of them days sounds like you also were stirring the pot asking for things you already knew they didn’t have but yet you still were stopping in To me it sounds like the dude you were asking questions was just giving answers hoping they might sell. You knew better and that is what separates the die hard fisherman like yourself from the weekend warrior.

I’m betting you will return, maybe not this month, next or this year but, you will find yourself in Gander Mountain again.

It is hard to remember the people who work in these box stores really don’t have say in what gets stocked. They can make suggestions but, the call made on the products being stocked comes from a much, much higher place.

I shop Gander in La Crosse and now except it for what it is. Butch takes good care of me when I stop in. Sometimes they might not have exactly what I was looking for but so far when talking with Butch he has been able to come up with alternatives that works just fine. Thanks for your time Butch

So with that little piece said…you guys have fun with your new Gander Mountain bash

Hope your week heads in a better direction John

Ya know, there’s a lot of truth in Bret’s comments.

Getting to know the Dept Manager and a few key employees goes a long ways. The Sportsmans Warehouse started upping their stock of a certain hook I used once they knew I was coming back.

Ended up taking a number of their employees out fishing.
I found out they were people too.

Ok, now that I had a little sleep and I’m a little less cranky, I’m not quite as pissed. I understand that Gander needs to make money, and profit margins are huge in clothing, but it still ticks me off that they never carry the stuff that really works, and if they do, they don’t carry it for long or are always out of stock. Like Brett said, I’m sure I’ll be back, it just won’t be for a while.

I shop Fleet Farm when I can, but the closest one is a 45 minute drive. Makes it tough to run there when I really need something. I did have to make an early run a week ago to be there when they opened to get some Black Gold Sunset flicker shads because they were hot at the time and I was down to one. And of course, that isn’t one of the 5 colors that Gander stocks.

Anyway, Madison doesn’t really have a lot of options on the east side of town, so you are kind of stuck with Gander in a pinch. It makes it tough when you burn through an excessive amount of tackle one day and need to restock for the next and can’t. I just need to buy in bulk now I guess so I always have a backup supply.

Oh, and Mike, I have never seen cross lock snaps in size 2 in the Madison Gander. They have a peg for them, but its always empty.

Do not buy firearms/ammo there either. My last purchase was $440 there, $409 at Cabelas and $399 at the local gunshop.

I quit going to Gander in Mankato a few years back.

I stopped there late November one time and was looking for a new flasher battery for my MarCum. he said oh, we don’t even have any in the store yet. I said, they won’t sell in June.

Then another time I was going through kato and I thought I would stop and get some catfish 10-0 Gammay hooks. Not a one in the store and they are located near the river for catfishing.

I have not been back for a few years and won’tt even bother again.

I take my fishing very seriously and feel like I know quite a bit about what I want when I visit a store to pick something up. When I need something small and already know what i’m looking for, I typically will visit Fleet Farm for a quick purchase.

When i’m looking for advice on a certain product or I am looking for something in particular, I visit Deans Tackle Box, Joe’s Sporting Goods & Thorne Bros. Service is everything to me when it comes to this type of stuff and these 3 companies have earned my business time and time again.

I agree! I was in shopping for a couple rods this weekend and they had their newer (gander series) rods 25% off. But they didn’t have what I wanted in that rod but they did in one of thier other gander series. So I asked the guy if he could give me 25% off those and I would take them. His response was that rod isn’t on sale! I work in retail and get bounced every day about a discount. I would rather give a discount than lose a sale! Guess they have enough money they don’t care they lost a customer!

Bret, I told you to sell your Gander stock.

I haven’t had much problem with the service there, I got nothing against the floor people, that is for sure. But I am not going back to a place I won’t find all that I need just because the floor staff is nice either.

Is it me or did they have a bigger selection in the past?

Slow Death hooks don’t work anyways so everyone and every store should just send me there current supplies and I’ll dispose of them properly into my tackle box

I have a love hate relationship with Gander. there are certain items that i can and will buy at gander that make it worth it for me to shop there. Living in savage its nice to have the gander and fleet farm in lakeville right next to eachother, so if i cant find what i want at gander, fleet farm usually has what i need. for example, i went on sunday to stock up on jigs and mister twister tails for the next cabin trip this weekend. i started at gander going in knowing that they will probably not have mister twisters, and i was right. so i bought my jigs ( little disapointed they dont have a better variety of colors) and a bonus, they had big bite paddle tails for $.99! i then went over to fleet farm and of course they had my mister twister tails i needed!

i dont bother asking the people at gander for help, if i cant find it, then it must not be there, and im not going to waste my time talking to the employees because half the time they arent around and the other times they are in the wrong department.

has anyone been in the lakeville gander since they remodeled it? ive been in duluth for school and when i went in there on sunday i felt like i was walking into a bass pro shop…i swear 75% of the fishing section was bass worms and cranks, and the rest was split up for walleye, panfish and catfish.

If I’m specifically looking for one item, I will call first to see if they have it in stock simply because I don’t like self-inflicted torture.

Ever tried buying a #5 Jigging Rapala in January at the LaCrosse store. They sell out in the first two days when they get them (at least the good colors), and won’t re-order for two weeks. I’ve seen it happen for about 8 years in a row now. I get mine earlier, but almost every time I’m in there during the winter I hear somebody being told it’ll be two more weeks.

Unfortunately, yes. I hate their remodel. Like someone else said, everything is on a cube in the middle and they stock it from toe to titty. Nothing is at eye level and you get dizzy walking around in circles.

Sadly, most of the bigger stores are going to be stocked bass-heavy because that’s what sells.

I don’t mind going to Gander, but I don’t walk in there with high expectations. IF (and it’s a big if) I can find someone to help me with a specific question, they can generally help. I also don’t expect to find a high level of fishing knowledge across the street at Fleet Farm either, though.

The Lakeville Gander makes me scratch my head with their remodel. It looks like a department store and when I asked the guy what happened to their bait shop he pointed to a cooler with a couple boxes of crawlers and leeches in it. It is like they are playing a game of “how crappy a store can we run and still get people to come in”. I left in disgust but I know I will wander back in at some point but not likely in the near future. Everything we use to go there for they have stopped carrying. Has anyone else noticed that they no longer carry bucktails for tying hair jigs. That use to be one of the items that got me in the door—I guess if I was looking for some biking shorts or ladies pink camo undies I would be happy they stopped carrying those yukkie deer tails. It is what it is and we will be complaining for years to come I am afraid—-thank goodness for online ordering and a few great websites—what was that one again—oh yeah—–DeansTackleBox.com!!!!!!
