Any info on what to do / what to see?

Not taking the boat, so I’d only be able to fish from shore (if at all).

Family trip, boys ages 4 and 6.

    Thanks!

    Boat tours around the area.

Rent a bike and tour the island

And most importantly, have a drink at Tom’s Burned Down Bar (maybe without kids)

I’d put this question in the Lake Superior forum found in the Minnestoa State list. Grant Sorenson or one other of the locals can offer up a lot of information on this area. Jim Hudson is another one that comes to mind with great info.

Personally I know that smallies are BIG abnd sassy from that area and they can be caught from shore in some areas as I have done in past trips up that way. If you can find a rocky shoreline with some easy access you’ll find smallies. You might find a trout of some sort as well but I think they can be seasonal. I have always just cast spinners like a Mepps in a size 3 or 4 and have tossed some deep shad raps too with good luck.

Thanks, I’ll make sure to pack my 4 piece St. Croix travel rod and a reel. Maybe a few jigs/plastics, some raps, and a few Mepps.

Any fun activities / tours / trails to do/take with the kids?

We do plan on seeing the fish hatchery. Should be fun to see all those huge trout/salmon up close.

    Thanks.

Don’t go if it’s windy unless you have a strong stomach. The ferry crossing can be brutal at times if the wind is howling! Other than that I can’t tell you much because all I’ve ever done is drive the road up and back. I would’ve loved to stay and explore a little more.

“BIG BAY” park on the east side has one of the nicest beaches on Madeline, for the family – miles of white sand. If you can, rent a canoe, and fish the “landlocked” bay just behind the beach/park – both lg & smallie bass, pike.

Big bay park is great. Take some float toys and the kids can ride the tide up and down the stream. My daughter had a great time when we were there about 15 years ago.
