As much time as I spend outdoors, I had never seen a ladyslipper in person. We took a trip to the North Shore for some camping last week, and I found a bunch! Cool looking flower!

It’s surprising how many people in MN have never laid eyes on our State Flower. I was over 50 before I saw one.

Nice find Ralf! Thanks for sharing the photos!

Thanks for sharing. I was talking to someone just the other day how scarce the state flower seems to be and where you had to go to find them. I saw my first at a state park near Grand Rapids about 23 years ago but have not seen one since.

LOL, I mentioned that to my wife. I said that I could come up with a more colorful name for them

REALLY? I had no idea. I guess growing up with them all around is something I’ve taken for granted.

You guys beat me to it!

The first one I saw, I was in my 30s. But it was right outside the Park Office at Itasca State park. I suspect they were planted there on purpose, so I still have not seen on in the Wild, without man’s interference.

By the way, after the park ranger caught me in the flower patch, they gave me the boot.

I beleive what you found was a patch of pink lady slipper, the state flower is the “showy lady slipper” also known as the pink and white slipper. The pinks and whites are common in some areas up north and often occur in large patchs. Half way from elk river to Mille Lacs you will start to notice large patchs of whites in the woods off of 169 near where it goes over the Rum. I have only seen “showys” in the woods 2 times so far and never a patch. I also know where there is an isolated group in west centeral mn Very easy to understand how its the state flower they are AMAZING!

Does this mean Brian K hasn’t actually seen the state flower in the “Edit actual number” years he’s been on earth?
