Trolling motor issue

I have a 10 y.o. Minnkota power drive 12v trolling motor that stopped working yesterday. Got power and it turns ok but the propeller won’t move. Just clicks when I give power to it. Took the prop off and no line or crud to prevent it from moving. Is it shot? Foot pedal shot? I’m stumped.

Has it been awhile since you last used it? My guess would be the seals are failing and you’ve got water into the motor housing. By chance did you notice any rusty water weeping from around the prop shaft?

Motor Clinic has been very good to me in the past. That’s why my well-used 1998 Minnkota still works great.

Very likely your controller board is bad. I just fixed a buddy of mine’s with the exact same symptoms.

Bought board off of ebay for $69, replaced and it’s worked great since.

Apply 12V across red/black motor terminals that connect to board and see if prop spins. If yes, board is bad.

This link helped me out a bunch. Easy fix after you get the new board!

i’ve had it out 5 or 6 times this year already. worked the same as always. no rusty water leaking. just quit yesterday about 1/2 way thru the day. probably caught more fish by being forced to anchor.

I’ve heard of those control boards going bad. might be a great time to upgrade to a 24v 80lb with i-pilot!

Gotcha. If leaking seals are the issue the motor usually comes out of storage as inoperable. So… electric / control board it is.

Try taking the top cover off. Check the wires in there. There are cheap (IMO) connectors that sometimes get so hot they melt the wire at the connector. Fix appropriately if needed.
