Bowfishing C&R???

So, I was fishing Mill Ruins the other day. A guy was shooting carp – and there are plenty of them there. He’d stick one then just shake it off his arrow and shoot another one. There were a half dozen long dead floaters stinking up the place already. What’s the rule on that? When you arrow a carp, don’t you have to take it with you?

They should be disposed of properly. Leaving them to float is a violation.

    Here’s my rule…

There’s a bad one in every bunch.

I would have been on the TIP line ASAP. That is horrible.

Yep, TIP needed a call. Might have wanted to call the police non emergency number too. You telling me there is no law against a bow and arrow in a Mpls park?

I suppose your not suppose to leave them muskies lay there either huh???

I guess in the old days a comment to the guy about leaving them lay might be in order, nowdays with all the wacko’s I’d just make the phone call

I’m sure the MPD would be just fine with that

per page 12 of the regs
Depositing fish entrails or fish parts into public waters or onto lake or stream
    shores is prohibited.

    and per page 60
Must take reasonable measures to retreive arrows and wounded fish

Guys like this create more rules and ruin it for the rest of us.

It’s kind of funny that you are bashing this guy when he is actually helping the lake by removing carp. I UNDERSTAND there is a law about this, but the things rot in a week or so and are gone. In reality, is it much different than gut hooked walleyes being released into Mille Lacs to die shortly after? Have any of you ever called a cop after seeing someone throw a candy wrapper or ciggy butt out a window or in the lake?

He’s not helping a single thing! Bowfishing isn’t going to even put a dent in the carp population. Rotting flesh has been proven to be detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. And rotting fish really makes for a nice waterfront for people to enjoy Not to mention the image this yahoo is giving the public for us ethical sportsmen.

And shooting muskies that are not native to a lake is helping.
Just last year I shot a deer and then decided it was not big enough so i pushed it back in the woods. It will rot and be gone in a week of so, right

The guy is a moron and should be punished to the full extent of the law. It is nice guys like him give PETA great ammunition for REAL bowfishermen

He is not removing anything… I UNDERSTAND there is a law about this, but the things rot in a week or so and are gone. They rot in about 3 weeks, unless something drags it off In reality, is it much different than gut hooked walleyes being released into Mille Lacs to die shortly after? I do want to keep a walleye, I knew was gonna die anyways, but out of the slot, the law says release… the law also says you can’t leave carp that you killed laying around Have any of you ever called a cop after seeing someone throw a candy wrapper or ciggy butt out a window or in the lake? yes

Super, he was fishing the river.

I am still surprised that no one would have called the cops with all the foot traffic around there. It’s not every day you see a guy with a bow and arrow downtown.

I’m living in a bubble or so I’m told…but the bowfishermen in my bubble are very very careful not to break laws.

They have enough haters and they know they don’t need to try to make more.

I believe the bowfishing community would be harder on this fella than any CO or LE.

    IMO.

I’ve seen guys bow fishing there before – and I don’t fish there that often. I’ve never seen them carry any out.

Fish harvested by bowfishing must be removed and properly disposed. The Land of Lakes Bowfishing Association in no way condones such violations and we will be developing etiquette for MN bowfishing. We are also currently working with the DNR to better educate folks about the do’s and don’ts of the sport. If you see anyone illegally dumping fish or not taking them with them I would encourage you to call TIP and report the violation. This type of activity is unacceptable!

Bowfishers waste all the time. Make it against the law to bowfish.

Huh? What would cause you to say that? I know a lot of guys who bow fish and ALWAYS keep their catch. Many give their catch’s to pig farmers. Are you just assuming? Or are you seeing it happen? The bow hunters I know on here have excellent track records and have fought in court on behalf of their sport! Again, tell us how it is that you can make a statement like that and not follow it up with some proof. I can guarantee there will be someone on here shortly proving me right!

I think it’s more the case of a few bad apples giving all bowfisherman a black eye. Go out to waconia the morning after they’ve been out and look for the dead sheephead and bass. From my dealings with bowfishermen if it has fins and swims it’s fair game. It scares the hell out of me when I see them head for the shallows at night on one of the best Muskie lakes in the metro it’s just a matter of time before I find a 50+ inch Muskie with a hole in it. Like I said though it’s just a few bad apples making everybody look bad.

There’s a whole raft of people committing some sort of violation, probably as we speak…er..type.
I’ve seem far more dead fish on the shore from general fisher people than ones with holes in them, much less muskie’s

I somehow think bowfishers are the least of our problems.
    imho

Your right Al bow fishermen as a whole group are on the bottom of the list of our worries but what your saying is fishing in general is harmfull? At least hook/line anglers have the option of releasing what we catch.
