Looking for someone in the East metro that can fix my laptop. I did some online research and it sounds like the motherboard is fried. I called Staples and I was told they would diagnose the problem for $69.00. I bring the laptop in and the guy pulls the battery out and tells me they need to send it out to get fixed for $360.00. They can’t fix it in house. He doesn’t have the “tools” to find out what’s wrong with it. I wanted to the guy. Any help is appreciated.

What kind of laptop? Make/model? What made you determine that it is the motherboard that is fried? Might be able to help you out, just need some more info. PM if you want to.

    Deano,
Just buy a new one. Cheap right now. Tablets are the rage. Driving laptop prices down.

Glad I do not have to pay metro prices.

I had a mother board put in my desktop for a grand total of $59.00. That was everything. It was out of a salvaged unit but still works great.

Got a fellow in town who fixes my issues as cheap as it gets.

Hardware repair is a lot like getting a car / truck fixed. The trick is finding a good mechanic. Once you find that person anything can be fixed at a reasonable price, particularly if you’re willing to scavenge used parts. From experience I would recommend staying away from the retail chains that offer technical / repair support. While I’ve met a couple savvy individuals most weren’t well enough trained or experienced to go beyond basics. IF you can find a neighborhood repair shop (they’re everywhere) off of a good recommendation that’s where I’d start.

Laptops cost more to fix than do desktops. Harder to work on and change things out on. I think $69 to check it is ridiculous. I do some hardware work and live in St. Paul. I’d be happy to look at it for nothing if you want to bring it to me. Can’t guarantee I can fix it, but I’ll look and see if we can’t figure out what’s wrong and what it would cost to fix vs buy new.

    PM me if you’re interested.

what brand, model, and what is the model number on the sticker on the bottom?

also, what errors are you having, which led you to believe the MB is bad in it?

also, if you end up wanting to look at purchasing a laptop, let me know and i’ll find some deals for you. Might even have a line on some gently used, out of warranty corporate equipment.

Contact Smartie computers at http://www.smartiecomputers.com 651-304-3073. They are in Hastings right after you cross the bridge. They have worked on my lap top and do great work and are not high priced.
