    How could they do this?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Soldiers returning from Afghanistan are complaining that they had to pay Delta Air Lines $2,800 out of pocket to check extra bags, including at least one case carrying a grenade launcher.

In a video posted on YouTube, the soldiers say their Army orders authorized them to bring up to four bags with them as they returned from Afghanistan to Fort Polk in Louisiana.

They say when their 34-member unit checked in at Baltimore-Washington International Airport for Delta flight 1625 on Tuesday, the airline charged them $200 each if they had a fourth bag.

One staff sergeant says in the video that his fourth bag was a weapons case containing his M4 carbine rifle, a grenade launcher and a 9 millimeter pistol.

Their flight and luggage should be free! Delta should consider it a honor to help those boys get back home.

Delta has zero credibility with me.

Since the buy-out of Northwest I have refused to fly Delta. It also was in the news that Delta is closing training facilities in Mpls. St. Paul and transferring the jobs to Atlanta.

Seriously…………..would you expect anything less out of Delta then the disrespect they are showing our troops?

You will all see a retraction within 24 hours if it isn’t already out there. Delta will try to save face and issue a statement and refund very soon! Just watch!

I see this as employees on the ground not having the authorization to waive the fee and not going to the right people to get it done. Once it gets to actual decision makers they will take care of it. It’s just how business’ works.

Why isnt the government contracting with an Airline to haul all of their solders home vs sending them with the great unwashed?

    Wrong.

Delta attempting to make it right.

    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/06/08/delta-airlines-changes-policy-after-charging-soldiers-returning-from/

UPDATE: Delta Air Lines announced Wednesday they will allow American troops to check four bags free of charge.

The decision came amid public outcry when an Army unit returning from deployment in Afghanistan was charged a total of $2,800 in extra baggage fees.

“We would like to publicly apologize to those service men and women for any miscommunication regarding our current policies as well as any inconvenience we may have caused,” read an earlier statement posted on Delta’s blog.

“We are currently looking further into the situation, and will be reaching out to each of them personally to address their concerns and work to correct any issues they have faced.”

The reversal came just one day after two soldiers, Staff Sgts. Fred Hilliker and Robert O’Hair, filmed a video onboard Flight 1625 and posted it on YouTube.

They criticized Delta for the additional charges, complaining that the 34 soldiers were charged as much as $2,800 in baggage fees.

“We were frustrated with the situation,” O’Hair told Fox News Radio. “Honestly, we were just trying to get home.”

O’Hair said the trouble started Tuesday during an 18-hour layover in Baltimore. His unit was heading back to Fort Polk, La., after a deployment in Afghanistan.

O’Hair said their military orders stated that each soldier was allowed to check up to four bags free of charge. But the Delta agent told the soldiers they would have to pay for the fourth bag.

“My extra bag was my weapons case,” he said. “I had my assault rifle, a grenade launcher and a 9-mm. pistol.” He said the baggage fee posed an immediate financial hardship for the soldiers and many of them expressed immediate “irritation, frustration and shock.” “A lot of the guys didn’t bring credit cards because, heck, how much do we need credit cards in Afghanistan?” he asked.

“It was an unexpected price and the fact they were going against what our military orders stated.”

Afteward, the company changed its policy. Col. Thomas Collins, a spokesman for the Army, told Fox News Radio the baggage fees “seem to be unusual.”

“Historically, the airlines have been gracious in waiving baggage fees for our troops deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars told Fox News Radio that Delta’s fee was the “worst welcome home any soldier could receive.”

“We know this is a business issue and that the troops will be reimbursed if they are authorized additional baggage in their orders,” said VFW spokesman Joe Davis. “But the shock of even being charged is enough to make most servicemen and women simply shake their heads and wonder who or what it is they are protecting.”

Since many of the troops did not have cash to pay the fee, O’Hair said their Lt. Colonel ended up paying hundreds of dollars for the ones who couldn’t afford the price.

And while the soldiers are expected to be reimbursed by the military, O’Hair said it could take weeks for them to get that money – putting a financial hardship on some military families.

“Luckily I was able to pay it and I can wait for my reimbursement,” he said.

“But what about a Private coming back home? A lot of these Privates are living paycheck to paycheck. They have kids to support and they need that $200.”

Delta is just trying to save face now. Too little, to late, in my opinion.

That is an EFFIN Joke. It should all be free, not just the 4th bag. Rediculous and petty.

Well…. being the US government is involved. I could see a scenario where Delta tells the gov 3 bags and the gov tells the troops 4 bags. Just sayin.

It was a mix up in an airport. Happens all the time… to troops coming home, businessmen and women heading to meetings and families off on a vacation. I doubt Delta has a “screw the troops” policy on the books and I guarantee you that the employees at the ticketing counters were only doing what the computers were telling them to do and had absolutely no authority to change that in the moment.

I’ve never worked for or done business with a company that does everything 100% right 100% of the time. What’s important is how a company reacts to correct mistakes when they happen. And in this case it sounds like Delta is setting things right. Do I wish these troops had received a smoother flight home? Absolutely I do. But I also believe this was a mistake and not done intentionally.

No doubt…. can’t be the end of the world trauma. If you want to be truely disgusted & somewhat embarrassed, just go tour a VA hospital some day and see how yester years soldiers are treated. Understaffed and crowded to say the least. Easy to fix the 4th bag mix up, not so easy to fix the aftercare they were promised.

Pretty bad mix up. From the Delta website:

    http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/baggage/checked/index.jsp

    Quote:

Active duty U.S. military personnel traveling on orders to or from duty stations, and active U.S. military dependents traveling on relocation orders, are allowed up to four checked bags in Delta’s Economy Class and Delta Connection® carriers (regardless of cabin), and up to five checked bags in First and Business Class on Delta aircraft only, at no charge. Each bag may weigh up to 70 lbs. (32 kg) and measure up to 80 linear inches (203 cm).

I could not agree more with you. I have, and have experience with that. My step father is a WWII vet. When he needed them the most they turned him down. He passed away in January, a upset man that they would just look past him after what he did for this country. He was a silver star recipient. Our country needs to look after its military hereo’s much better than we do.

lets see here, deltas policy in place at the time.
    first class: 4 bags free
    buissness class: 4 bags free
    coach: 3 bags free
the soldiers told (vea orders?) by someone higher up they were allowed 4 bags free. honest mistake (not by delta)
the persons working the ticket counters are NOT dission makers.
heres where this embaresses me as an american.
a couple of soldiers took it upon them selves to record the missunderstanding and post it on youtube knowing it will get the media all whipped up.(i wonder how many of these soldlers are going to try and squeeze a little something extra out of delta) vary unprofessional move.
yes this was an unfortunate misunderstanding but the military could have handled a little better.
    now for the real kicker.
the veterans of foreign wars tells fox news
“worst welcome home a soldier could receive” REALLY
i’d be willing to bet there are some vets out there that were drafted right out of high school, sent to some jungle in asia to partisipate in a “police action” and return home to protests and have people spit on them and call them baby killers.
point is this was an honest missunderstanding that some turned in to a media frenzie.

The point is SLACK is that our soldiers should not have to pay an F’n dime for their bags or their flights home. I say let them bring 10 bags if they need to, even if they are taking advantage of the system.

first off JOE a honorable soldier does NOT take advantage of the system. and yes i agree they should not have to pay for the forth bag.(no they didn’t have to pay for the flight or the first three bags) but i do expect them to conduct them selves with the utmost professionalism, they do represent use and our country.
