I am not proficent at the art of the spinner rig but I want to pull some – quickly along emergent cabbage (wink) and was wondering the best spinner blade for a power trolling technigue – I am going to try this week on Rainy.

Let me know blade style, brand, color and where you can get them.

    Thanks

If it was me I’d use nice big blades (#5 Colorado) which give more lift and keep you from getting fouled up in the salad. They also make a great vibration that brings fish in from a distance. If you can, use a bright color like chartreuse or orange so you can see the rig and know if you’re clearing the weeds. You should be able to find them anywhere and tie your own rigs. PM me if you have /’s.

Not sure exactly how fast one can pull these but I was up to 2.5mph and had luck with a minnow in tow.

The hammered gold was the best color I found last weekend on Rainy Lake.

The reason I used the hammered gold was a fellow who fishs Rainy alot but does not guide said use them and he was picking up crappie and eyes along the weedlines.

Mr Granrud more than likely can chime in with more expertise.

What bait are you planning to use – crawler, leech, minnows? What are you fising for?

Many people build their own so they can respond to changing conditions.

I would suggest smaller blades (1/2″, 3/4″) for good lite and early season and larger blades for later.

I keep a selection of silver, gold, chartreuse, fleck in gold and silver. Effective color combos are going to change with conditions, similar to stick bait options…

Usually I spin Indianas, but colorados and willows do well also.

I always tie a stinger hook on also, at least for crawlers and leeches. catch 75% on that hook. I usually down size that hook and put it 2-3″ back. Helps slow down bait theft.

Bead color is not to be ignored also. I keep two sizes, medium and small.

I usually order from Cabelas or Ebay.

Id just buy the Lindy spinners, Indiana’s and colorados, beads are already done, good hooks, great fluoro leader thats plenty long. Slide a bullet sinker on, rattle bead, then pop the spinner out of the box and fish on!

Pre tied spinners have come a long way in a short time frame, however that is all about convience which is nice when starting out with spinner rigs. Tying your own rigs does have some value of catching a bunch of fish on your own tied spinners. Now start with pre made packaged spinners and modify as you go, eventually you will notice that buying components in bulk will save you money and will also give you something to do on a Rainy day…..that is once your done picking crawlers for those spinners.

I just got back from Rainy and have always used hammered brass(gold), and Northland holographic spinners in gold and blue. We used both minnows and crawlers and did very well. If weeds are emerging, use a crawler blower to inflate the crawlers to get them above the weeds. Northland also has some new LIVE FORAGE spinners that look awesome and I will be trying later this summer up there!
