I had someone inquire about my boat and they are from Canada. I’ve looked into it as much as I can and everything seems on the up and up. I even talked with him on the phone. He said he would be willing to pay with paypal but after looking at the site it looks like I would loose over $300 to fees. What is would be a secure payment method. Cashiers check and I go to my bank with him? Also I assume simce I have a title for the boat and trailer we would both go to the license bureau to change it over, just not sure how it works with a resident of Cananda. Any advice would be appreciated as selling bigger items stresses me out.

    hi James,
It’s been quite awhile, but 2 boats ago I sold it to a guy from Winnepeg. He said he needed to have 2 bills of sale to be able to get back thru the border and customs. One for the boat and the 2nd one for the trailer.
His wife worked at a bank, and I let him give me a certified check in US dollars. I trusted him about it, and had no issues or problems.
I wrote down all the info on his drivers licence and vehicle licence number.
Am not sure if you need to go to our licence bureau for a transfer, but a call to them and/or the dnr boat licence -st paul office would be in order.
Am sure I do not have any of the correspondence about it from him.
Your prospective buyer should be able to contact his customs and boating office as they do it all the time and get the full scoop about what is required.
    Good Luck,
    Jack

    Hi James,
We just got through selling our travel trailer to a guy from winnapeg.
We insisted that he pay in US cash. He paid and we went to the DMV and transferred the title.
He will need a bill of sale, take down all his drivers license info, and you can transfer it yourself ( he does not need to be present for this ).
Make sure to check out the cash yourself or at your bank.
    Hope this helps.

If both you and the buyer have Paypal Premier Accounts,
he can pay via Paypal Mass Pay, you don’t need to pay the normal paypal fee. And he only pays $1 transaction fee. Not sure if you need to pay the currency exchange fee.

Follow up question. Is a bill of sale a seperate document or is it just the info on the titles?

Bill of sale is separate from the titles. make sure you include all the extras on your boat as well, such as electronics. The guy that bought my boat last year just about didn’t make it back thru customs because we just listed boat, motor, trailer on the bill of sale and left off the electronics.

He paid with a certified money order. Just have your bank verify the funds before you make the transaction. Was the first time for me with a Canadian sale and all in all it went very smooth.

Thanks, the boat sold yesterday. I found an online site for the bill of sale. I didn’t list the electronics but both motors and the trolling motor. He made it through fine.
