anyone have any plans, ideas about a nice, light, but will stay weighted down by the dock cage for the fish the kids catch, kind of like the big fish baskets?

    thanks

We use something like this at the cabin. We keep large muskie suckers in it in the fall. We wrapped it (and zip tie) with wire mesh with a smaller diameter. We have to make sure and secure the opening. We have otters that have eaten more than a dozen 16 inch suckers over night.

I’ve seen both the washer tub and wire kennel in action We’ve got a wire kennel at our cabin now. The downsides I see are 1) it rusts 2) it catches every bit of aquatic vegetation that washes to shore. Otherwise, it serves it’s purpose well. I have had friends that use the wash tub. It works great, but you’ll need to find some type of cover for it.

One night, I watched a bowfin swim up to ours that had some sunnies in it that my nieces caught. It was persistant in trying to get them, but it never could figure out how to get at one

I was going to say kittens, but thought I might offend a whole slug of warm hearted people.

Just guessing, but ours is about 30″ tall, 24″ wide, 24″ deep.

if you are going to hold sunnies or bullheads in it, you want to get your mesh size down to 1″ x 1″ at least. I built mine with 1/2″ mesh and greeen treat frame and was very happy with it. it lasted over ten years before i needed to re-fabric it. The wood was still holding up. I tried the dog kennel pictured and a turtle got in and ate my sunnies…

we used a plastic 55 gal drum and drilled a ton of 1/4″ holes in it, put about 3″ gravel in the bottom to hold it in place and a little wire to hold it to the dock post , a gate hinge and hasp keep the top on

    great idea.
make the holes 1/2″ to 3/4″ or even 1″. Blade bit will work. thousands of holes. it’s your aerator…
smaller (1/4″) if your are going to keep minnows in it.

Make sure you put your name on it. The regs require that if my memory serves. We had a floating fish pen and got warned one time. It was empty. We all used it. He told us we would have gotten a ticket had we had fish and it wasn’t marked. In Wisconsin it is illegal to:

    • to use or possess a box or container in which to hold live fish in any water of the state
unless a legible tag bearing the owner or user’s name and address is attached to the
container. Containers and live boxes used by anglers while fishing are exempt from this
    requirement
