Boat title question

A friend of mine recently bought an old 14 footer with a trailer. The seller said that he didn’t have a title, and because it had a lifetime trailer registration, they didn’t need one. Sounds fishy to me, I just purchased a used boat too and had a title. How does one go about getting a title?

I think in MN, if the boat is under 17 feet long, it does not need a title, just a boat registration, that is transferable.

A call to the DNR St Paul office on Monday would quickly clear that up.

Just sold a 2001 Crestliner 14 footer. Never had a title. (Minnesota) Just a trailer card with the lifetime tag.

I’m not up on boat or trailer titles. Have him call your local DMV office (where you get you car stickers) they will tell him what he needs.

The boat is registered thru 2012. He has a watercraft registration card. The seller must fill out a transfer at the dmv right? That’s how he will be able to renew his registration in his name right?

I went through this with a 14 foot boat trailer and motor a couple years ago. You just need a bill of sale with the license number of the trailer and registration number of the boat. Also needs to have the fact that they are selling the motor and the sale price and date of sale. This will need to be signed by the seller and the buyer. You will then take this bill to the DMV to transfer ownership.

Oh! The buyer brings it in to transfer ownership? Thanks!

Of course you have to transfer ownership. That way the governor gets his cut of the sale…lol

I believe you hit the nail on the head.

I believe my card is blue. I also believe it must be kept in the boat for proof of ownership while fishing.

just go in with a bill of sale, and if you don’t have one, write one up… and get tabs for it.
