There is / was a bill in the house to do just that because of the Roseville dog that was injured on duty, hopefully this will become law. Not sure where they are at with that now????

just got off the phone withthe Bagley police department. Officer Peterson took a day of personal leave understandably.
They can be contacted at 218-694-6226.
I offered my staffs services to set up a website for donations, that Ofc Peterson might be able to start a new pup. (it’s the business that i’m in, service dogs)
if anyone wants to make a donation, they are setting up an escrow fund at the local bank. All donations are appreciated.

They can’t and won’t, theres no law for that. Police K9s are not police officers..

i like how people get all worked up if a police K9 gets shot. but if a cop comes in my backyard without my permission and shoots my dog because he feels threatened – it is “ok”….

Maybe you need to become a police officer. Once that happens, then let us all know how you feel about it!

I do not know if I would be willing to charge a person for murder for killing a police dog.

I would however somehow have them reimburse the officer for the costs to train another and give him some jail time.

Just like in that youtube video where the cops come in swat style and shot a family dog with the kids right there and all they find is a gram of pot but thats ok right.

Damn right it is “okay”. If they are being threatended or feel like they are in danger, do what you have to do.

I am pretty sure they had a reason to be in the house or they would not have been in there in the first place.
I work hand in hand with local LE and have friends who are officers and know the things they can and do have to deal with.

When it comes to life safety, mine comes first. Sorry, just how it is.

As far as a police K9, anybody who intentionally injures or kills them should have the same punishment as if they were human. They are sworn in just like a human.

They do down here Wats, they get charged the same as if it were an officer. You shoot one of thier dogs down here and they don’t mess around. I did a drywall job for one of the officers in Canaine and thier serious about thier dogs. The busts or raids down here are thought out and if they think theres reason to go, then its for a good reason, very few hearsays down here. The last few years we’ve had a bunch of people move in here from Chicago and some of them are pretty darned rough and right off the streets, the police here don’t cut them any slack. I don’t care, Id protect myself too.

Could not see why or hear why they would have wasted the family dog.

I do understand that the police are under some pressure in these situations but yes, there are times when it has been proven that they have went way overboard.

Sad story. Especially since he footed the bill for this small community to even have a K-9 unit.

I am not trying to justify everything that cops do. However having to labs of my own, this story strikes a chord with me. I have not viewed the youtube video, and probably will not. My thinking (wrong or right) is this – If the cops are anywhere, I think they have reasonable reason to be there. Yes it is terrible that kids had to see that, but I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes. But when you find 2 dogs, and 1 being a K-9 cop dead, i can’t believe it was just a coincidence. Just my opinion.

I apologize if I offended anyone.

There are laws concerning the injury/killing of a Working Dog.

609.596 KILLING OR HARMING PUBLIC SAFETY DOG.
    Subdivision 1.Felony.

It is a felony for any person to intentionally and without justification cause the death of a police dog, a search and rescue dog, or an arson dog when the dog is involved in law enforcement, fire, or correctional investigation or apprehension, search and rescue duties, or the dog is in the custody of or under the control of a peace officer, a trained handler, or an employee of a correctional facility. A person convicted under this subdivision may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than two years or to payment of a fine of not more than $5,000, or both. In lieu of a fine, the court may order the defendant to pay restitution to the owner to replace the police dog, search and rescue dog, or arson dog, in an amount not to exceed $5,000.
    Subd. 2.Gross misdemeanor.

It is a gross misdemeanor for any person to intentionally and without justification cause substantial or great bodily harm to a police dog, search and rescue dog, or an arson dog when the dog is involved in law enforcement, fire, or correctional investigation or apprehension, search and rescue duties, or the dog is in the custody of or under the control of a peace officer, a trained handler, or an employee of a correctional facility.
    Subd. 3.Definitions.

    As used in this section:

    (1) “arson dog” means a dog that has been certified as an arson dog by a state fire or police agency or by an independent testing laboratory;

    (2) “correctional facility” has the meaning given in section 241.021, subdivision 1, paragraph (f);

    (3) “peace officer” has the meaning given in section 626.84, subdivision 1, paragraph (c); and

Sure hope this law does change. The restitution is the cost of a puppy…
Two year old trained dogs are running $150k. Now Copper was nearing the end of his run, so his ‘value’ was lower, but $5000 doesn’t come near replacing him…

They should have to pay the total cost for a dog and the training.

Trouble is, next to noone would have those kind of funds.

It’s a bad deal to say the least.

    Agreed.

Right now, the bank is setting up a PayPal fund (they didn’t know how to do it…) and that should generate a reasonable amount to at least cover expenses.

I’m talking to the head of Mn service dog training to see if he’ll set up training for trade, i.e. help on running the airport when it gets dirty, etc. Plus, Larry is uniquely positioned close to the border, so that is a benefit if there is someone running north or south.

    Looks pretty good.

If he does straight detection as opposed to detection/attack, then I’ll donate a pup.

Looking to me like Ofc Peterson is going to come out of this trained as a pro. Still too high a cost to pay…
