Anybody ever used REAL snakes as bait??

I would think on top of weeds, they would be good bass or northern bait.

    Comments??

Wouldn’t you have to get pretty close to a real snake to make that work?

No and the thought of having a snake in my boat creeps me out.

well doesn’t concern some of us reptiliophiles too much. I’m thinking 20# northern or 8# LMB…

I wouldn’t use one because I would feel bad for the snake. Snakes are cool to have around and they eat a lot of critters. If I had snakes in my boat, I would bring them home and release them in my yard. Now, snakes on a plane is a completely different story.

No snakes for me, I would have to quit fishing if they only bit on snakes.

I hate the things and I am more afraid of them than they are me.

You could try an artificial snake! Which end would you put the hook?

I also like snakes to much to be running them through with a hook. Here is an option.

    Natural Baits

I used a small garder once when I was a teenager. (Illigal??probly) but it was cool. I hooked it on and dropped it next to the boat. Naturally it swam towards shore and looked supersweet! I never had to cast it,,just dropped it again and it would take a different path. I dont know about largemouth but I bet slimers and Muskies would hammer it!

Are baby wood ducks illegal to use for bait?

A couple of summers ago I saw a frog eat a snake. That’s right, the frog ate the snake. It was a small snake and a big frog. I was on a jet ski going very slow with my son and in a creek that feeds directly into the main channel of the Mississippi when I saw a small snake swim in front of us. My son didn’t see it so I spun the jet ski around so he could see it and as the snake reached the muddy bank, a frog grabbed the snake in the middle. The snake was about 12″ long and it was flailing about. After a while the frog hopped bank in the water and started swallowing more and more of the snake, tail first. Sure wish I could have got it on video… pretty cool thing to see.

I always wanted to raise hamsters for bait. How cool would it be to see a musky blow up on a hamster floundering on the surface of the water.

now that would be cool. the best I have seen is a Northern hammer a baby squirrel talk about a cool picture of the pike totally out of the water and what a noise. scarred teh crap out of us and we were on shroe wtching it all. had to explain to the kids that the squirrel was already dead. , but just floating before eaten.

My wife sees a snake, she’s over firing up the lawnmower.
she’d be all for you using snakes for bait.

Why would she do that? That little snake wasn’t hurting anything.

Maybe you could explain to her that snakes eat mice and that killing snakes will result in a steep rise in the mouse population. Then see how she feels about chopping them up with the lawn mower.

I’ll let you tell her that–personally. But, think she’d tell you traps catch mice too…. personally, I love snakes, can’t say much for BK liking snakes—-unless his gun is around.

I’d have to quit fishing if we needed to use snakes. We saw a little “Stripey” today and I nearly jumped out of the bow!!

Well, i lik esnakes also. hate silly people who kill them senselessly.
BUT, if a garter snake is between me and a 20# muskie… well,

    anyone know the law.

FWIW, i suspect that plastic imitations are going to swim quite similarly to the real thing…
