A fried of mine had a duck make her nest in his window well. Anyone know how long before ducklings can leave the nest? He is afraid that there is no way the ducklings will be able to get out of the window well on there own, he is going to contact the DNR tomorrow and get there help / advice on what to do.
Stick a one by 4 just long enough for the window well and they will be able to walk up the plank..And watch out for cats they will kill them real quick…
They leave the nest right away and stay with mom. I agree you just put something in there if you want them to get out on their own. I would just reach in and grab them and let them out. I had raised ducks with my kids for a few years and have a bit of experience with mom and babies. Mother duck won’t abandon them if you touch them or none of that. At work we rescue them from the storm drains and mom is not normally that far away and when they get out then reunite.
That’s kind of neat. Back home, my room was in the basement, so I had a big egress window. You would not believe the things that would fall in there. Worst was a young skunk. I woke up in the middle of the night due to the aroma. We finally got it out by putting in some chicken wire for it to climb. Also had a pair of stray cats fall in mid-fight. That’s a terrifying noise to wake up to!

I was staying at a hotel where a mom and baby ducks jumped into the pool. Caused quite a stir with the hotel guests when the ducklings couldn’t get out on their own. I put a branch in the pool and they climbed out only to jump right back in three more times. Each time they’d go into panic mode trying to get out. My favorite animal rescue was in Montnana. We were backpacking in Glacier National Park at a place called Hole in The Wall. Two girls came into camp screaming. They’d gone to the outhouse only to find a Marmot trapped in the bottom of the box. The poor thing had been there a while and was screaming to get out. I found a long branch and stuck it into the hole. Before I even had time to step back the Marmot came flying out the hole like a bullet. Right up the tree, up my arm and over my right shoulder heading on his way home. The shirt took a major hit. Needless to say I couldnt’ wear the shirt anymore that trip!
