Yamaha Fuel Trouble

My fishing partner has a 1999 Yamaha V Max 225 (V225TLRX). When started the first time for the day it starts perfect. Or if you fish for more than a hour or so it will start perfect again. It’s when you shut it down and restart within an hour that there is a problem. You have to get in the hot foot some to allow air in the motor for it to start and then it smokes to beat hell. The problem is raw fuel is loading the motor when it sits for a short time. I suspect that after an hour or so the excess fuel evaporates which allows it start good again. I hooked a fuel pressure gauge to the motor and in runs up to 35 psi. Then the fuel pump shuts off and the pressure drops about 10 psi every minute. I’m leaning towards changing the fuel pressure regulator. Has anyone else had this trouble and what did you do to fix it?

Something to check would be the low pressure fuel pumps as the diaphragms in these can go bad. I had similar symptoms on my Yamaha on start up where the engine would smoke excessively and be loaded up till I cleared it w/ the throttle. It would also idle rough w/ a lot of exhaust smoke. Replacing lp pumps cleared up these issues and it only took about a half hour to replace them myself. Good luck. Let us know what the issue is when you get it figured out.

I’m trying to think how if the low pressure pumps are bad could it load up on fuel. If a fuel pump is not working it wouldn’t be getting enough fuel instead of to much. Unless I’m missing something I don’t think that’s my issue. Was there any other reason’s you decided to change the LP fuel pumps? Thanks for the help!

IIRC you can pull the pumps off, and prime the primer bulb, if you get gas, you need to replace them. BBC is a great resource!
