Some our favorite fungi are making their presence known in the woods! Anyone else out there stalking the “elusive morel”? Good luck to all I’m hitting the mother load tonight! I hope

Yes, I have been out twice this week and got some both times.

Boy they tasted great sauted with butter and a steak.

The yellows should also be popping very soon.

I love eating them and like walking through the woods. With that being said I have a heck of a time finding any. Is it best to have someone show you where to look and what to look for or is it something you find and figure out on your own????

The best areas for me typically are around dieing elm trees. Not the trees that are kind of off white in color with all the bark off the tree but the dieing elm where there are chunks missing and lying on the ground.

There can be alot of dead bark on the ground by the dying tree and if it has pricky ash by the area, all the better. The early part of the picking season, I will usually look for south facing slopes as that area the ground warms faster or sooner and the grays will pop there before deep in the woods ewhere the tree canopy will keep the ground temps a bit cooler.

If I am in a new woods and do not know where they may be, I walk through the woods looking for the dieing elm trees and kind of zero in on them. When the ground foliage gets a bit higher, then I like to take a broken tree branch about 4-5ft long as move the weeds around to locate the morels. The grays are smaller and can be hard to find and the yellows are typically larger and easier to locate.

If you find one, take your stick and move the weeds around as there are usually more close by. When I walk through the woods slowly, turn around and look back as sometimes you can see them better from another angle.

Hope this helps you some and good luck with your morel hunting.

i use a 4′ 1″x2″ lath that has been sharpened on the tip and sharpened on the edges. you can use it as a walking stick AND to part weeds AND as a walking stick.

Wow… Just finished with a morel adventure for the day! We went out at 6 tonight and had no luck by 7 but, that last hour we moved to a flat sun beating dead elm area and it was killer! One tree donated 6 Grey’s and another gave up an awesome 142 Yellows (personal best)! I was really surprised to see the Yellows but, with those hot temps I guess it makes sense. We even had to hide in the woods while picking since a vehicle busted out the binocks to try and spot us, are car got them thinking easy money (darn scalpers!). Pork Steak, Beer and Morels too good

So I got 3 growing in the backyard and fenced off. Ok, 2 are in my yard and one is in the neighbors, but she said I could have it.

My question is, does anyone know when I should pick them. I kind of was going to wait until they showed signs of wilting, but I am afraid like most mushrooms they will rapidly deteriorate after heating their peak.

    Any suggestions?

More often than not I pick them when I find them, and I usually get out a few times a week. You need the right micro-climate with little sun to keep them growing larger, and that can be rare. Usually moss-covered loamy soils that gets only an hour or two of sun a day. Too much sun/wind and they dry out very quickly. That said, I’m starting to see the giant yellows where I live so maybe giving them a day or two isn’t a big deal. Found one last night the size of one and a half beer cans. I’ve had everything from cattle to kids and mushroom stealers that have ruined the perfect patch I was letting grow, so as long as they’re bigger than my thumb they usually get eaten!

Well it is only three. 2 are about the size of my thumb, but the one I have let grow is up to about 3″. They are grays…I think. If I knew I could get more, I would just pick them. But I doubt I’ll be getting out in the woods to try and find a dozen. Its bad enough getting skunked a few hours of fishing, I don’t need to add mushrooming.

Can I be a Mushroom Friend to. Found my first mushrooms last night while fishing the river. Was trolling some cranks tight on a shore current swept rocky shoreline. The trees, vines and brush where pretty thick on the shore but happen to look up at the right moment and threw a little clearing was a morel about 20′ back in the woods. Just a little clearing and that thing was standing nice in tall in the center of it all by its self. Might as well had a big sign on it saying “Mike, Im right here”. Dang exciting to find my 1st one. Parked the boat and about 20 minutes later had about half a bag full. About 3 or 4 of them where beer can sized or bigger.

Got my spot now for years to come. Fried in a little butter late last night and they are pretty good.

So when is morel season going to be done in the metro. We hope to go looking again this weekend.
