As a side note, is Thorne Bros in Anoka or Ramsey County? Just wondering so I know if I will need to send my business to Musky Tackle Online. I don’t see any reason to pay more sales tax when I can the goods elsewhere.
So you think taking this out on Thorne Bros is the route to go? I am sure that the extra .50 on a $100 bill is not going to break the bank for you. I believe their customer service and knowledge are worth the two quarters, but that is just me.
About the only way I can protest the stadium is do everything in my power to make sure my money does not go towards it. Why would I pay extra to get the same service I can get elsewhere? It’s not like I said I would start shopping at Rollie and Helen’s. Heck, if they had any customer service I would always shop there and not pay any sales tax! But back on subject…It is called tax avoidance. Other business not related to the stadium will be impacted too.Besides the money they want from the state, I don’t have too much to complain about this. If the people who live and work in Ramsey are willing to pay the higher sales tax, then build away. But don’t complain about any other budget cuts or anything like that in the county since it was determined a stadium is so darn important.
May 12, 2011 at 12:33 am #965396The Vikings are a franchise company. Not too different from the McDonalds going in to the new mall down the street. McDonalds stores get finance deals through corporate and other non-taxpayer funding. The NFL has plenty of cash. They could sneeze up $1B in funds no problem. They should.
This thing is DOA. There are 12 days left in the session and there is no bill, no sponsor, no committee meetings scheduled. Not going to happen this year.

In plain terms, it’s is known as “start high” and come down from there…. this is not the deal… but there is one rolling now. Avoiding taxes is illegal in some circles Let’s take the legacy money everybody volunteered up a couple years ago, for a stadium… and maybe a Viking/Walleye stamp or maybe a gill net tax… on people with less than 50% native american blood, who own them… man I got this thing solved already
May 12, 2011 at 2:10 am #965437Proponents of building a new stadium with some public funds are put in a seemingly indefensible position.
All I know is major metropolitan areas are willing to spend money to make teams stay or lure them away from where they are. People in a metropolitan area who have a team threatening to leave have a false (IMHO) sense of indignation. There is an air that it will not matter if they leave.
All I know is that Minnesota without the Vikings will be a Minnesota missing a nationally recognized identity. I know to some that doesn’t matter. So be it.
I don’t lake (Freudian slip?) subsidizing sports teams at all, but I am a realist and this is the pro sports economics climate we live in. If we aren’t willing to pay, someone else will always be there willing to do it because they must see a value in the absence of a NFL franchise that we have grown accustomed to and taken for granted.

I’ll tell ya that makes perfect sense. Along those notes, those that see the value should pay for it while those of us that don’t won’t have to pay for it.
People who don’t fish don’t buy fishing licenses. They don’t pay for things that benefit the fish unless they choose to.
Perhaps there should be a vikes license. Oh wait, it’s called a ticket. Let the ticket sales pay for the stadium.
May 12, 2011 at 2:23 am #965445The tax we paid for 30 years on the Metrodome has never gone away. Re-directed after the dome was paid off. These “new” taxes never go away! The state is $5B in the red today and no plan yet to pay for it? And they want to increase our taxes so billion dollar companies and millionaire players make money? No thanks.
We are already close the highest taxed citizens in the country. Can’t keep the taxing game going. Taxes on everything need to decrease and government has got to stop spending money like a drunken sailor!

If that helps me avoid paying anything towards a stadium I am all for it. It can’t be that bad. Even St. Croix is building some of their rods in Mexico!
But really, how can one oppose something and then turn around and give money towards it? That would be like a person against tribal netting and then going to a casino.

That’s why there is a local sales tax going into it.On that note, I sent an itemized refund to the MN and FED IRS asking them to send me money for all the things I don’t use that my money has been used for.
I also want my portion of the fishing license paid back that goes towards stocking walleye. Also any money back that benefits any fishery that I do not use.

I think most of us have no problem with the 450 Mil that the Vikes are contributing or the 350 Mil that Ramsey coutny is contributing. It’s the 350 Mil from the state tax payers plus another 100 Mil the state will pay for upgraded infrastructure. If the Vikes and Ramsey County want to come up with the extra 450 Mil and not ask for our help then I could see supporting it.

Yet they offered to provide that much money. Hmm, bad budgeting?I agree Jon, this whole thing isn’t good.
May 12, 2011 at 2:03 pm #965523“PURPLE PRIDE, PURPLE PRIDE!!”
Just like senseless government spending won’t stop, the Vikings will get their stadium. Maybe not this session but they will get it. sorry guys. i really hate to be a realist sometimes, but that is where the smart betting money is at.
May 12, 2011 at 3:06 pm #965553The Vikings will move to another city or be bought by an owner who is just fine with playing in the Metrodome.

Ramsey should float a loan for the part they are asking from the state. Then charge a 10% surtax for non residents of Ramsey for Viking parking, tickets and concessions until it is paid off. They could also offer a Vikings TV package to those out of the county and offer it free for residents. They could also block use of any roads built improved to only Ramsey residents.

May 12, 2011 at 8:50 pm #965674It doesn’t make a difference where you move them to they still BLOW!

They are already taxing the $#@& out of our beer and liquor purchases now. Over 3% higher than Wisconsin.
