Rain Suit replacement questions

Just returned from a week in Arkansas. We were there to fish Stripers in Beaver lake. Needless to say, with 17 inches of rain in 4 days the lake rose 15 feet and turned the stripers off.

My rain suit failed to keep me dry during the down pours, so I am looking to replace it with better/dryer rain gear. My question to all IDO members is what is your preferred rain gear and why? I have been looking at the Bass Pro shops “Bone Dry” suit and the Cabelas “Guideware”. Just am having trouble making up my mind and don’t want to spend that kind of money unless I am sure it will keep me dry.

    Thanks for your input

I bought the Stormhide bib and parka from Fleet Farm last summer and I have been happy with those. I also looked at the Cabelas guidewear, but decided to save a little money.

I have been putting my Frabill Stormsuit through the paces and have been very happy with it so far. It’s loaded with features and very light weight.

i have the cabelas gore-tex bibs and rain jacket and will never go back. the frabill would be nice also if u have the money but look in the bargain cave at cabelas and u can find deals on these suits all the time. and i believe anything clothing with the cabelas name brand has a lifetime warranty if i’m correct and they haven’t changed that policy on me. hope this helps but the cabelas gore-tex u can’t go wrong good rain gear!

I picked up the FXE STORMSUIT this weekend for a trip to Florda. I didn’t feel like driving up to Leech to get my Guidewear.

I was able to try out my new Frabill Storm Suite this last weekend and absolutely love it. Granted I was shore fishing but in heavy wind, rain and even a little snow. The big test for me will be in the boat and staying dry in the crotch area while driving my tiller across Leech lake on a windy day. So far I give it a AAA+ rating:)

I have guidewear and have been very happy with it.

I suggest something slightly bigger so you can layer underneath as conditions can vary.

I have not tried on the new frabill gear yet.

Cabelas does not have a life time warranty on every thing. Found this out when trying to return my bibs that started leaking after 3 years.

The Cabela’s Guide Wear gear is top shelf. They stand behind their product. Last year I had a liner in the jacket come unstiched. Intead of my arm going down the sleve the liner seperated from the outside jacket. They replace the jacket no questions asked. I even offered to take a price adjustment but they refused. They just gave me a new jacket.

Don’t these suits have to be resprayed once in a while to remain water proof? I washed mine and had to retreat it to bring it back up to parr.

I have Guidewear but can’t remember how old, maybe 8yrs. Finally a little leaking on butt, legs and forearms after fishing 8 hrs in rain. Sprayed an entire can of silicone on it and no leaks in another 8hr day in the rain.

The one issue I have with Guidewear are the pockets with velcro tabs. After a long day in the rain all the contents of all the pockets are wet. The zippered pockets are dry. I don’t know if they have improved those probs with the big pockets.

what is the product that you spray your suits with. i am thinking of giving mine a treatment before we get into full swing here.

i have the Gander H2O tech suit and works great for me. got it as a gift but cheaper than some suits if you bought it. i would buy it again otherwise I wouldn’t hesitate to buy the cabelas stuff or the new Frabill stormsuits. definitely don’t cheap out too much though. get something quality.

x3….this suit is very light, comfortable, and it breathes well. Its design is different which allows it to fit you personally better than a typical desigin suit.

Once a year I will wash my rain gear and spray it down with a bottle of Camp Dry. I think its actually intended for boots and such but it works well for me. Gander, scheels, any camping type store should have it!!!!

I looked for Camp Dry but couldn’t find as others had rec it. I used a silicone spray I found in the shoe dept and Farm and Fleet. The directions included use on fabric in addn to shoes.

ReviveX works well for rejuvenating rain gear. Be sure to fallow instructions.

I forgot to mention I washed my rain gear in Nikwax Tech Wash and it still leaked a little. Then I applied the silicone and stayted dry.

    Stormhide! Stormhide! Stormhide!

I used the parka as my main jacket all winter, and yet I’ve worn it when it was 85ºF and 90% humidity. It’s well vented, has all the right pockets in all the right places, and the bibs are comfortable even for a big guy like me (6’4″ 290).

Something about the way it blocks out the wind and yet breathes well enough to be comfortable.

I love it… I’m gonna miss it when it’s too nice out to wear a jacket.

I have a question for the people that have the Storm Suit. Is there a way to keep the hood down when not in use? My biggest complaint about my current rain suit is when I wear it as a wind block. Routinely the flap of the hood is constantly blowing around. I wish it had a zipper or some way to clasp the hood to the back when not in use, versus tucking it inside the neck of the jacket. If the storm suit has the solution, I’ll be buying one.
