Going to Canada in June to Red Lake walleye fishing, but may also try casting and trolling plugs for northern. What would be a few casting or trolling northern lures to slaughter northerns. I don’t want to break the bank and fill up a tackle box with lures, so give me your go to lures. Thanks.

Two of my all time favorite casting baits for Northers are a simple Johnson Silver Minnow tipped with frog legs pork rine. Go with the middle size. Dont’ want to go to small, nor do you have to go super big. Kills them every time. My second favoite is a #5 Meps spinner bait. Chartrouse, gold or Orange blade. Good luck.
May 1, 2011 at 5:12 pm #962299Here are some of the basics:
1. 5 of diamonds in yellow/red
2. Red/white dardevle
3. Johnson minnow in gold and silver
4. Spinning blades like big mepps
5. Muskie body baits
6. Soft body swimmersThese should pretty well cover you. Get them in a couple of sizes. $200 should pretty well cover it.
May 1, 2011 at 5:56 pm #962310These are what I would bring.
1. 5 of diamonds in yellow/red with a brass back.
2. Red/white Daredevil with a silver back.
3. Johnson minnow in gold and silver, bring split tail grubs to put on. White works best for me.
4. Mepps
5. Chartreuse spinner baits.Try and find moving water. Any place you have a river moving in or out.
Most important thing is quality leaders.
May 1, 2011 at 6:32 pm #962316Depending on when you go many pike will be around reefs deeper where the walleyes are at. when we see one chase a walleye i throw a depth raider walleye color always good. Also large zara spooks white is great. Any flashy lure works good but many pike will be quite deep in mid summer and hard to find.
May 1, 2011 at 7:11 pm #962325#1. 5 of Diamonds in Yellow/Red
#2. Daredevil in Hammered Gold/Orange
#3. 5 of Diamonds in Yellow/Red
#4. 5 of Diamonds in Yellow/Red
etc….Have fun !!!
May 1, 2011 at 9:16 pm #962356if u are using a baitcast rod then u can use some unconventional pike lures if u want. i use musky baits when i go to the sipi and they outfish any daredevil most of the time. the best 1 i found is the hellhound glidebaits are deadly. pike seem to like that action and most pike guys don’t know what gliders are so it’s kinda top secret..another bait that catches a lot of pike and is pretty weedless is a shallow invader by musky innovations. i unfortunately catch a lot of pike on that lure while musky fishing. go ahead and give these lures a try…u won’t be dissapointed!
May 1, 2011 at 9:54 pm #962369My brother in law used to bring a bunch of musky lures to Canada too…can’t say he caught anymore than the rest of us Daredevil guys, but in lost lure $$$’s, he kicked our butts… Plus, it is barbless and a daredevil with 1 or 2 hooks is easy to release a fish quickly and get to the next cast
BTW, mid-June will be just after ice-out in alot of Canada this year, so they will more than likely be in the shallows. Moving water is also a good bet
May 1, 2011 at 10:45 pm #962381what colors do you recommend for the musky invader and hellhound baits??
May 1, 2011 at 11:45 pm #962394If you can find a white shallow invader or any chartreuse hellhound those colors are money. Also check out doctor spoons in blue/silver and gold KB spoons.
May 1, 2011 at 11:55 pm #962395I ordered one of each. If they don’t work, I am sending you the bill!
May 2, 2011 at 2:34 am #962452The pike love Rat-L-Traps. I like the red or red/chartreuse
crawfish pattern, usually 3/4 oz. A large, flashy spinnerbait is a great option also.
