We used to do this back in the late 80’s to early 90’s. We called it a ‘high school science project.’ We did it because it went boom, but we never left it for someone else to pick up.

Looking back it was probably not the brightest thing to do, but that high school mentality took over and blowing things up ranked pretty high on the list.

Thanks Bret it sure is sad that kids have nothing better to do than try to hurt someone

Here’s the deal. If you pick up a bottle and it starts getting warm, making noise and expanding…

…and you hold onto it, you might be a moron.

Seen this done at our resort one summer. All was good until one adult,…yep, an adult, secured the lid, walked twenty five feet away and turned to look at the explosion. ER visit for that dude, stiches in the face from gravel while it literally blew his hat off.
Dangerous to say the least, using it to intentionally endanger lives………evil!

This does in fact work. Like Blue said, we also use to make these in high school. When they went off they were as loud as a 12 gauge shot gun. Watch out for the gatorade bottles, they’ll throw some shrapnel.
A good piece of information though, these bombs do not need to be shaken or moved to explode. Once the drain-o and tin foil are mixed together and sealed tight, that alone causes enough gas in the bottle for it to explode, it just takes a little longer than shaking the bottle.

    Thanks for posting Bret.

You know, when I was younger I was a bit of a hellyon. But, of all the things we pulled and there were many, we never damaged others or their property.

I guess I figured my Father would kick my u know what if I would had.

I can’t believe anyone would ever do that

And for the record, “The Works” Drain cleaner works best, and you don’t need the water. A 2 liter bottle makes a really big bang….. I heard

If a person wants to make anything destructive all they have to do is use google. This post sure didn’t turn a bunch of people into bomb builders if that is what you are leading to.

Yeah, I heard that too. That is, until the ringing in my ears and then I didn’t hear anything for a while. We called ’em Works Bombs.

As far as I know, you can’t make a time delay one. What was probably happening is kids throwing them on someone’s lawn or sticking them in a mailbox hoping to startle someone and the homeowner picked them up in that 30-60 second window that it takes for them to expand and go kaboom.

Unless they found a way to separate the tinfoil from the drain cleaner, causing it to remain inert until the bottle was turned upright, but that would be purely malicious and would seem like an awful lot of work.

Yes thats what I was alluding to. I think saying teens are ‘mixing some explosive items together’ would suffice instead of posting the recipe for an explosive device. Seems wrong so I mentioned it. If the moderators dont care then we have another reference on google for making a xxx compliments IDO.

    Lame…IMO

Just making the public aware of what could be a bad situation.

Us, too. Made plenty of them, but never targeted anyone with them. Just for the fun of the boom. Come to think of it, you can do the same thing with a bottle, dry ice, and water
Oh yeah, I may also have a few potato cannons in my garage, too

    Thanks for the info Bret!

Suzuki – I don’t thing providing the recipe will necessarily entice people to make bombs for destructive purposes. The folks making the bombs to hurt people do so with clear intent. It’s not likely that they stumbled across the ingredient list on the internet one day and thought, hey let’s go plant a bomb in someone’s mailbox! Many, many people know how to make all kinds of bombs and destructive devices like spud guns. But only few actually use their knowledge to hurt someone purposefully. It takes more than just having the knowledge to cross that line and it’s useless to blame the internet for anything but being a good time-waster.

Yup, the good old works bomb. I don’t think it is possible to put a delay on them. You really never new when they would go off. Now about the extra potatoe cannons you have around. When could I pick one up?

Everything is on the internet. That doesnt mean it’s right or legal to post more of it. Everyone acts like we have closed community here. In a sense we do but make no mistake this is a public forum. You dont have to login to read everything said here. And everything is accessible via public search engine. Spreading the word about this danger is a very good thing. Posting the recipe is not.

That is information I didnt want/need to know. And I sure dont want kids that came on here for fishing info to see it either. Your kidding yourself if you think this post will not give some kid the idea to do this that otherwise wouldnt have ever looked for such info. Do you have any idea how many kids come on this site to learn from us “Adults”. I firmly believe this post should dissapear before that happens.

Don’t worry, kids already know how to do all this, I made my first one about 35 years ago, long before the internet, fact few even had cable tv back then. If they don’t know I bet theres an app for it.

Now as far as spud guns go, Modern Marvles had a show on the other day showing how they are made in detail and what propelant to use…
