I’ve got a dozen oak logs pegged for Shitaki mushrooms and last fall we ate well. Maybe another 5 years to go on the logs. I got my peg spawn from Field and Forest. Good stuff.

Too bad they can’t do this with morels

But then that would take the fun out of the spring woods

It said two heavy crops after fourteen days another crop starts after you pick them water then at the end smaller crops till its done. First time for me with this kit Ill know more later. I do know the sheriff maybe a road kill is a good idea just for the loins.

I know a few people who tried to cultivate morels to no avail. They have not figured that one out yet and still remains a mystery.

I used the same company with good results. I used the pre-made thimble spawn on about a dozen logs, too. I got 4 years of production so far with another 1 or 2 to go. Lots of production in Spring and Fall when we get rain and its about 50-55 degrees.

I would like to try that, thats alot of years and growing time for the mushrooms any web address we can go to. The Co I ordered my kit has that mushroom but the oak log sounds good for production. Do you need to add new spawn every year in the log?

Bob….the spawn used in the oak logs lasts for between 5 and seven years. The logs should be at least 4″ in diameter and cut fresh. The logs get bored and plugged or filled with loose spawn and then sealed with wax. Then the logs get dunked in water for 24 hours, removed and set in a semi-shady spot and the wait begins. Mushrooms might start as soon as the fall if the logs are pegged early enough. The following spring is a better bet.

The Shitakis I grow come in the spring and again in the fall. The ones from last fall were all of 8 to maybe 10 inches in diameter. One made a meal when served with a meat of some sort. Shitakis are rich and rich in flavor. I think they are the prince of all mushrooms and if you go to buy them in a store take a thick wallet….they are spendy.

Its a Wisconsin company and they do have Morel spawn but they won’t promise anything with it. They offer so many kinds of mushrooms its boggling. The people are super good to work with.

Been not too bad Bob. Life, age and health are catching up with me. To the doc again today. More pills, more inhalers, needles today too. Getting old is tough on a guy. I need to fish more is all. lol

The Shitakes are great mushrooms. Last fall I cut some that were probably close to 2 pounds. Fresh these critters will make you weep for joy.
