Anyone hear of an universal antifreeze that can be used in conventional cooling systems or in place of Dex? We had a flush/new coolant in a car last fall. Popped the radiator cap off and there is about an 1/8″ thick of rust colored gel around everything visible in the system.

Guessing another flush and Dex is in order

You can mix Universal anti freeze with ANY anti freeze , but being its so dirty looking I would flush and refill with universal anti freeze.

Universal anti freeze meets all OEM specs.

How well do you know the service center that did your flush and new antifreeze?

It has happened where one does not get what one pays for.

    Universal is fine fluid.

That’s what I suspect When i questioned it today, all we had was the original paper work that said “universal” which = SOL

I agree with Jeff. Why did you choose to put the Dex back in anyway? Dex seems to cause more issues than the standard stuff and costs more. IMHO

They probably just used regular old ethylene glycol(green) when they flushed it. When the dex cool mixes with ethylene glycol it can gel. So they obviously did not get all the old dex cool out! Did they use a chemical in the cooling system before they did the flush? I would say to just flush it again, but it may involve a little more than just a flush to get that gel cleaned out of everything!

I will bet they used regular antifreeze. When I replaced the water pump on the GF’s car,it originally had”Deathcool”in it.Used the YELLOW universal coolant, had no problems.

I would flush it good, and use the yellow stuff.

I never looked at the universal. Are they all yellow? This was green, which I believe is regular. From the search I did, the gel in the system looks like the other posts I found online where Dex was mixed with regular.

My first flush was last fall. I pulled out the pink and put in the green. Funny that I have heard so many mechanics recommend this.

You will need to flush your system again. I recommend using a two part acid flush system. It is manufactured by prestone, but I have only found it at GM dealerships.GM part number is 12346500. Follow the directions on the can, then refill with green anti-freeze, and you will be good to go.
