I started pouring my own sinkers and really like the results. I am having problems finding lead. I’ve called several recycling centers and they pretty much tell me “good luck” when I ask to buy lead from them.. Are there better sources around here?

Here’s the only place I know of…and rumor has it that they aren’t selling any longer either. But it’s worth a phone call.
Kirschbaum-Krupp Metal Recycling

(612) 521-9212April 11, 2011 at 2:16 pm #955922Try going to any auto repair shop or tire shop. Ask them if they have any wheel weights that are being discarded. Many shops have them and are more than willing to part with them for free. Good Luck in your search!
April 11, 2011 at 2:30 pm #955929I tried Kirschbaum Krupp last summer and they were no longer selling lead to the public. They got pinched for not collecting sales tax on lead, so they stopped selling it. Most tire shops I talked to already had an arrangement for wheel weights. One other source is chimney flashing if you know any roofers.

April 11, 2011 at 2:42 pm #955927I buy lead came all the time at J-ring glass…use it to make stained glass windows. It comes in 6′ lengths for about a buck a foot….not sure if this helps. …but you can get it at any stained glass shop.

Also, you can get a couple seasons worth of jigs out of one downrigger ball.
April 11, 2011 at 2:59 pm #955941When I was looking I’d grab a couple 5 gallon plastic pails to use for exchange, many places seemed to dump their wheel weights in them and it was easier than unloading them into something else.
Try tire shops first, gas stations rarely seemed to have much.
Be prepared to pay for it, there’s enough smelters out there that the shops have figured this out.
Once you have a pail or two, smelt this stuff into ingots either outside or with a exhaust fan that moves a lot of air, you’ll get a ton of smoke and flumes.
I use a old water heater burner and a cast iron pot on a home made stand.
If you haven’t done this before, be careful, and do not get water near the melted lead, trust me on this one.
Eye protection and gloves are a must.Al
April 11, 2011 at 3:57 pm #955968Metro Gun Club in Blaine sells recycled shot from the fields. little smokey on the initial melt down but works great.
April 11, 2011 at 5:19 pm #956007Before I posted this I tried the Fleetfarm in lakeville at their auto service center. The person told me he can’t sell lead because they are following Wisconsin’s decision to ban it. I said what about the 2 tons of lead jig heads you have for sale on the shelf? He didn’t respond..

A lot different than around here. I checked around this area last year and was quoted $50 per 5 gallon pail!!!
I know a plumber….
tvfishermnPosts: 75April 11, 2011 at 8:19 pm #956076For the price of lead ingots on e-bay it is not worth the time to look around for it.
April 12, 2011 at 11:26 am #956270Tire shops work well. 5 years ago I got pails for free but now they charge.
I have one shop save pails for me and when they have 2-3 pails full, I get a call.

Words of caution here.
Mr J.Horn could be my best friends Dad…but since he’s a new user here, with no information in his bio and his email address doesn’t seem to come up with any search engine… I would advise proceed with caution.
Not a great way to welcome a new Ido Member and I do apologies for that. Tell us a bit more about yourself and I’ll delete my post with a more happier welcome.

April 12, 2011 at 9:45 pm #956490Just off the phone with Jerry, he’s located in the NW Metro with over 150 pounds of lead that’s been sitting in his garage for about 20 years.
He’s open to offers.
Jerry, what kind of work were you in? Someone might have a lead for you here.
