Well two of us finally made it out on the Wiscosnin River to try our luck catching walleyes thru the ice.
We went up by the Dells dam area of the river and walk out on a large sheet of ice where we spent the day along with 4 to 6 others who came and went as the day wore on.
Set up 4 tip-ups and then jigged in the shanty with jigging rapala’s, salmo chubby darters and nils master jigging shads.
Did not catch anything on those lures. Switched to a 1/32oz jig/minnow combo and finally caught a 17″ walleye at around 11:00am. Also had several tip-ups go up but the fish dropped the bait each time.
Spent the afternoon jigging minnows and moving tip-ups around the small humps.
After 4:pm, the action finally got going just a little bit.
We ended up catching a 12″ pike, followed by a 15″ walleye and then a 26″ pike. Missed another one on the jigging rod and that was it for today.
All in all, it was a nice, windy day. First time ever fishing thru the ice on this area of the river. We are planning on coming back and giving it another try soon though.
