Any small to medium size rivers that hold big northerns. Use to be able to catch them in the little Eau Galle river, in a small hole, but they moved out. I’m just looking for a small spot to go in the summer and fish from shore or boat. I know the Namakogen holds a lot of nice fish and is the perfect size river, but its a little to far away for me. Like to throw a chub out and toss some crank baits. Any info is appreciated.

If you fished the Eau Galle River you can’t be too far from the Red Cedar or the
Chippewa. How about down at Arkansaw (Dead Lake) or (Silver Birch).
I’m not sure but Thomson probably holds some lare northerns as it gets flushed by the
Chippewa during high water. Where are you from?

Im from the boyceville area…just north of menomonie. Lake Thompson does have some nice fish in it for how big it is. Someone pulled a 41 inch northern about a month ago. I havent caught one over 32 this winter…but have caught them up to 36. No one has really been fishing it lately…i assume the fishing a bit too. This spring will be good for the lake though with all the snow we have melting…should bring in a lot of fish. Its a rough lake in the summer though….i dont think you can really fish it by boat with all the weeds. Anyways how is the fishing below the apple river dam. I know where it is, but haven’t really walked down and checked it out myself. Looks like it could be decent. If you are ever up north aways…the togatec dam is a great place to fish for anything from good sunfish, to largemouths, to northern. I even pulled a small 3 foot stergeoun once….ugly fish!
