I made my first trip of the year out onto the ice today, I have to say I am pretty happy with the results, though they could have been better. Crappies bit very well today taking jigs tipped with waxies, and crappie minnows alike. Bluegills were less plentiful, but were of decent size, Fishermen were doing well with tip downs for crappies, and flags were flying, too, but only saw a couple smaller pike caught. I was 0/3 on the flags today, but the crappie action made up for it.
The ice is ranging between 5-6 inches, and may be less in some spots. I would still use caution when venturing out, and would probably do so by foot only for the next week. I did see some ATV’s out on the ice, and somebody was dumb enough to drive a small pickup out there this evening. He made it off the lake, but when I was walking off I noticed he broke through the ice near the landing. He was very lucky it was shallow there!

Had a very eventful day on the flowage today. Brought a friend out who had never, I mean NEVER been ice fishing in his 31 years of life in Wisconsin! Well after today I am sure it will not be his last, as he started reeling in some nice bluegills almost instantly. For quite some time he was outfishing the guide! We caught bluegills pretty consistantly all morning with the occasional crappie mixed in. We did miss a couple on the tip downs, although Todd iced a hammer handle pike on the tipdowns. I was also getting flags pretty consistantly, nothing too big, but one 25″ northen was pretty girthy. All pike were released.
We ended up wth twenty panfish on the day, all caught on small moon jigs tipped with a waxie. The northen were coming on shiners a foot under the ice. Not bad for 4 1/2 hours on the ice.

A note about the ice conditins. We have 8-9″ of ice on Miller, but I would say 6-7 of it is good. I would not by any means consider driving a vehicle out there yet, it is simply NOT WORTH THE RISK. Upon our arrival this morning, a 4 wheeler had been pulling a camper style permanent shack, which did not get very far off shore before it broke through the ice. Luckily it was just the one side of it, and it was still pretty shallow there. Somehow they were able to free the shack from the ice. Use caution here and on other lakes, and know your ice conditions before heading out, it could save you a lot of headache, money, or even your life!

Yes, I did see ATV’s on the ice, with the cold weather, the ice should be growing a bit more by the weekend. If you go on at Fisherman’s Loop, stay to the right on the path when going out, as I think that camper went through in the same spot as that truck broke through.
